Web Pages and Social Media By Stan Palen VFC Webmaster
OUTLINE • VFC Website • NARFE HQ Website • Social Media
VFC Website • www.vanarfe.org • www.vanarfe.org/595/595.htm • www.vanarfe.org/595/595news.htm • www.vanarfe.org/1241/1241.htm • www.vanarfe.org/1270/1270.htm • www.vanarfe.org/1823/1823.htm • Program Chairs • Links
VFC Website • Submission Format • I can read most anything, but usually prefer plain word documents. • I edit most of what is sent to me to minimize loading time. If you send an update to your webpage, please highlight the changes or new info. • Newsletters - .doc or .pdfNOT .docx • Submit to stan@vanarfe.org or chapterwebmaster@vanarfe.org • Identify yourself and your chapter. • Usually I will send a message that I put it up. • Please verify it is up and correct.
VFC Website • Microsoft Word generated web pages have at least 3 times more code • On the website your newsletter will always be named chapter number news.pdf or doc • Example www.vanarfe.org/232/232news.pdf • For archives they have month year names • Only one chapter archives theirs and I do not keep them except as incoming messages.
NARFE HQ Website • www.narfe.org • Enormous wealth of support • Sample letters • Pamphlets • Latest news for retirees or active employees • Chapter rosters • Chapter member drops and adds
Software • I use Dreamweaver by Adobe • On the main page is a hit counter • If you want to know your traffic, one can be installed on your page.
FaceBook • You can add a facebook link to your chapter’s page • www.vanarfe.org/595/595.htm • www.facebook.com/help • Do not click on follow on facebook or twitter • Every time anything occurs on the linked site, you get a copy. • Going direct is fine, liking is ok (I think) • A facebook group allows anyone in that group to make changes, but for a chapter it should work well.
Twitter • I have an account, but do not use it. • I have enough to read now
