Mandate • Coordinates Focus Area 1 (FA1) of MTSIP 2008-2013: “Advocacy monitoring and partnerships” • Expected Accomplishments of FA1: (i) Improved awareness of sustainable urbanization issues at the local to global levels; (ii) Monitoring of sustainable urbanization conditions and trends improved; (iii) Habitat agenda partners (HAP) actively participate in the formulation of sustainable urbanization policies • Implements Subprogramme 2 of Human Settlements Programme, i.e. “Monitoring the Habitat Agenda” • Subprogramme 2 Objective: “To monitor and assess progress towards the attainment of the Habitat Agenda goals and the Millennium Development targets on slums, drinking water and sanitation” MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing

Strategy • Global collection, analysis and dissemination of data, including development of gender-disaggregated indicators for measuring progress towards the attainment of internationally agreed human settlements goals • Evidence-based assessment of the effectiveness of the policies and strategies recommended in the Habitat Agenda and elsewhere, as well as dissemination of lessons learned and best practices identified • Evidence-based identification, field testing, dissemination and mainstreaming of new and innovative policies and strategies in the areas of urban monitoring, urban economic development, gender and women’s empowerment, and youth and partnerships MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing

Main Activities: Policy Analysis Branch • Analysis of human settlements conditions and trends and reporting results to Governing Council & UN General Assembly • Raising global awareness of emerging human settlements issues and innovative policies • Main outputs: (i) Global Report on Human Settlements, one of UN-HABITAT’s two flagship reports, published every two years; (ii) Global Dialogue on Human Settlements (occasional research paper series); (iii) UN-HABITAT Lecture Award Series MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing

Main Activities: Global Urban Observatory • Collection, analysis and dissemination of global data for monitoring the implementation of the Habitat Agenda and the Millennium Development targets on slums, drinking water and sanitation • Developing and maintaining global databases on human settlements statistics and indicators • Main output: UrbanInfo Database MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing

Main Activities: Gender Mainstreaming Unit • Global monitoring of the mainstreaming of gender in human settlements policies and programmes at the country level and identification of lessons learnt • Mainstreaming of lessons learnt into programmes implemented with the assistance of UN-HABITAT and alone by governments and local authorities • Field testing of innovative ideas on gender and women’s empowerment • Main outputs: (i) technical publications; (ii) pilot field projects MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing
