  1. Effective Communication and Parenting A Western Perspective Alyssa Larson Speech 1700

  2. “ Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” -Robert Fulghum

  3. Communicating With Infants Babies Slip into this world and immediately begin communicating; their ‘language’ is their cry. Parents have the unique ability to decipher this language in order to meet the infant’s needs.

  4. Talk To Your Baby • Your voice is associated with comfort. • A gentle tone will have both a stimulating and calming affect. • Talk helps language development. • Try commentating, singing, or reading. • Babies learn to trust. • Your talk teaches baby the power of words. Raisingchildren.net.au (2006-20011) Raising Children Network (Australia) Limited.

  5. Other Ways We Communicate With Infants: • Touch • Kissing, rocking, caressing, dressing, bathing. • By promptly meeting baby’s needs. • This sends the message that she is important. • Eye contact and facial expressions. Raisingchildren.net.au (2006-2011) Raising Children Network (Australia) Limited.

  6. Children And Communication • Knowing how to communicate well with your child is one of the most important skills a parent can develop. • Parenting can be much more enjoyable for parents, and beneficial to children, when we are competent communicators. Childdevelopmentinfo.com

  7. “The WAY we talk to our kids has a huge impact on their learning and ability to listen to us”childdevelopmentinfo.com

  8. Have you thought about your style?

  9. Some tips to improve communication with your child: • Connect with your child • Use eye contact • Get down to their level • Show your kids both good manners and how to listen- sit down and have a chat • Be very direct • Give directions at an appropriate level • Avoid nagging • Be consistent • Stick to routines so kids always know what is expected • Make time for one-on-one • Especially if children’s ages vary because needs differ Childdevelopmentinfo.com

  10. And Now….. Dun……. Da…………Da…….. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  11. Communicating With Teens! The teen years are a time of great change and transformation. A few things are happening: puberty, moodiness, personality changes, rebellion, depression, insecurity, hormonal surges, social pressures, dramatic body changes, lack of energy, impulse control problems, withdrawal from family, excess worries, self – doubt and more! 12. According to the Attachment Parenting philosophy, there is still hope for parents. Try: • Know what to expect (what is happening at this age?) • Empathize (you remember what it was like!) • Spend time together doing what your teen enjoys (coffee?) • Continue to give hugs (and even “I love you”) • Don’t sweat the small stuff (save the battles for safety issues) • Be fair, understanding, and trustworthy (if you’re lecturing or punishing, teens won’t reach out) • Offer opportunities to be child-like – keep the home full of fun to help teens from rushing into adulthood. examiner.com

  13. Be on the same side! Enjoy getting to know who your teen is becoming. examiner.com

  14. Culture Affects Parenting Don’t forget that “culture is a powerful influence on communication behavior” and this is illustrated in the ways parents of different cultures interact with their children. (Floyd) ‘Communication doesn’t flow in two directions between adults and children in Ecuador. It is very linear. Parents command their children, and children are always expected to show adults respect. Also, parents teach their kids everything; they share all of their knowledge so kids are very capable.’ -Manuel Tamay-Chimbo

  15. In conclusion: There are many different approaches to parenting and the approach that one chooses is usually determined, or highly influenced by the culture they come from. These are just some ideas thought to be valuable in Western culture, but are not “the right way” nor are they “the wrong way.” I recommend a mindful and intentional approach to parenting and communication. Good Luck!
