IT Environment • CIO feels empowered to speak for college in system meetings but is not a member of college decision making body • Local IT governance needs improvement • No senior level group that prioritizes IT projects
IT Environment – con’t • CIO is not under pressure to reduce costs but is under pressure to do more with the same • Contract purchases are primary IT cost containment measure • Projects are completed within 12 months • No published formal IT performance expectations
Budget & Funding • Budget does not respond to changing environment • Administrative computing and instructional technology funding inadequate • Total Cost of Ownership is not considered when prioritizing IT projects • 10% budget increase needed to fund research on new technology
IT Staff & Training • $35.7M spent on college IT Staff Salaries & Benefits • $371,000 spent on college IT Training • Average of $500 per IT Staff Member • 92% of CIOs said their training budget was inadequate to IT keep staff skills relevant • More IT staff would be the most benefit to students and instruction • Most immediate IT staff need is application development
Chief Information Officer Chief Information Officer (CIO) is a job title commonly given to the person in an enterprise responsible for the information technology and computer systems that support enterprise goals. As information technology and systems have become more important, the CIO has come to be viewed in many organizations as a key contributor in formulating strategic goals. In many companies, the CIO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In some companies, the CIO sits on the executive board. Typically, the CIO in a large enterprise delegates technical decisions to employees more familiar with details. Usually, a CIO proposes the information technology an enterprise will need to achieve its goals and then works within a budget to implement the plan.

Servers • 1,700 Servers • Approximately $1M Spent in FY07 on Server Replacement and $500,000 Spent on Server Growth • Most Servers are Purchased from CIS Contracts • 60 FTE Provide System Administration Support • Connect to Campus Backbone at 1GB or Faster • 40% Have Implemented Server Virtualization
Personal Computers • 45,000 Personal Computers • Approximately $7.7M Spent in FY07 on Personal Computer Replacement and $627,000 Spent on Personal Computer Growth • Most Personal Computers are Purchased from CIS Contracts • 120 FTE Provide Desktop and Helpdesk Support • Most Colleges Purchase between 100 and 500 Personal Computers Annually • Connect to Campus Backbone at 100MB to 1GB
Wireless Access • Median 65% of the Buildings • Median 25% of the Classrooms • Median 25% of the Campus Geography • 90% Are Planning Wireless Upgrades • 3,500 College owned Laptop/Tablets w/wireless • 275 College owned Treo/Blackberry Devices
