History of the Computer and Internet Madison 5th Period
The First Computer • The first computer was built between 1939 and 1942 at Iowa State University by John Atanasoff, a math and physics professor, and Clifford Berry, a student.
Debug: • Debug is a process the locates, corrects, and removes errors, or bugs, in a computer. • The term, debug, come from Grace Hoppers in the 1940s were she was working on a Mark II Computer at Harvard University.
The Internet • The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential in computers value to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962.
Babbage’s Analytical Engine • The Analytical Engine was invented by Charles Babbage. The Analytical Engine was designed around 1833. it was suppose to perform calculations with instructions that were stored on punch cards. Babbage died before he could finish it, but the design severed as a model in the modern computer.
Herman Hollerith’s Tabulating Machine In 1881, Herman Hollerith started designing a machine to tabulate census data more efficiently than by traditional hand methods.
ENIAC… • ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. This was developed during World War II to perform complex trajectory calculations, but the war had ended before it was finished.
What Is Program? • Program is a sequence of instructions that a computer can interpret and execute.
Transistor to Vacuum Tubes • One benefit of the transistor replacing vacuum tubes is to save money. Vacuum tubes are really big, hot and use a lot of electricity. Transistor tubes are a lot smaller, give almost no heat and little electricity.
First Microcomputer • The first microcomputer was made in about the 1970s by Intel.
Binary System • The Binary System is a method of representing numbers in which only the digits 0 and 1 are used. Successive units are powers of 2.
