Tully Filmus, Rejoicing,1964, original pencil drawing on paper, Linda State residence
Description • In this amazing artwork piece, it illustrates to Yiddish men dancing and rejoicing (given the name of the painting). • In this pencil drawing, Tully uses very “rough” dark shading to make emphasis on shadows, clothing, and depth/ dimension. • Obviously there is not many colors since it is a pencil drawing, just black and some grey, and the white of the paper. • He creates a lot of texture and it looks like scratching. • Rejoicing was made on paper and Tully used pencil techniques to create beautiful pictures. • The biggest technique used was movement. He used many different pencil strokes to create to men dancing. • The background creates movement because the pencil shading behind the men. • The form is very organic and free flowing.
Analysis • The focal point of the image is the two men dancing but there is a balance between them. One does not overpower the other by size, shape, etc • The two men are kind of like a mirror image of each other because they are dancing the same way. • This pencil drawing has no pattern but is very proportional and realistic. • The men have basically the same clothes on and are dancing the same way so there is a great unity between the two figures. • With the unity there is still some pieces of this image that are eye-catching. For example, Their arms and legs jumping up and down draw lots of attention and notifies that they are extremely joyous.
Interpretation • The pencil makes on this beautiful piece of artwork seem like they move and wiggle and collectively makes the picture have a bunch of movement and flow. • I think that this drawing means that they have just received someone or something new and are celebrating about it. Maybe a new child, religious freedom, just arrived in America? • I think that Tully Filmus wanted to give viewers the chance to think about all of the joyful things in life even if the time is dull. He wanted to people to enjoy the little things. • This work is related to Jewish/ Yiddish marriages where they dance and celebrate wildly and enjoy ther lives and time that they have.
Judgment/Evaluation • I think the great amounts of detail make it a great success but there are fewer Yiddish or Jewish people which can lead to less of an audience. Although that is the case I do not think a smaller audience is a failure at all, just a way for the audience that is there to enjoy it more. • I really like his pieces of artwork so I can’t really say what is needing to judge or critique in his work. • I think the artwork is very unique because it has a specific style and audience, • Every time I have gone to my grandmother’s house, I have always wondered and loved this piece and another Filmus piece so much. It is very dear to my heart.
