12 October, 1492 Dearest Family, We’ve been sailing on the Santa Maria for 72 days! Our captain, Christopher Columbus hasbeen working us so hard. I was so excited to see land. On the island, we saw people with no clothes and dark skin. They seem friendly, but I don't understand their language. The island has hammocks and houses made of palm trees. We traded bells and beads for cotton , spears, and other things. The people here are called Tainos. They arenot familiar with our weapons, and all they have are wooden spears. We think there is gold here on this island because we’ve seen the Native Americans wearing gold. I’ll write back when I get more news. From, Noah Megyesi
