Washingtonian Woods Waves Swim Team Parent Information Meeting Monday, April 28, 2014 Purpose of meeting: To introduce key players and provide an overview of the swim team, changes from last year, and to answer questions.

Team overview: • Community-based team • WWD is one of seven teams in “O” Division in MCSL • Memorial Day weekend-end of July • Meets (competition) run for six-seven weeks • Afternoon practice every weekday (except Wednesday nights*) • Registration: Friday, May 2, 5-7:30 PM.
Practice schedule: • Practices start on Tuesday, May 27 and continue through the week of the last meet. Monday through Friday: • 4:45 to 5:15 - Pre-team (6 and unders) • 5:15 to 6:15 - 7 to 9 year olds • 6:15 to 7:15 - 10 to 18 year olds • Starting week of June 9, no Wednesday evening practice due to A or B meets; morning practices (to be determined)
What’s our pre-team? • Swimmers who have basic swimming skills. • Includes 6 years old or under (may include 7 to 8 years old swimmers needing extra work). • Usually between 4-6 years old (*). • Practice 30 minutes per day, in a group “swimming lesson” environment. • “Compete” in kickboard “races” on Wednesday nights (B meets). • May swim other strokes on Wednesday nights (if legal) or Saturday mornings if needed.
Swim meets: • “A” meets are Saturday morning meets (except for Wednesday, 6/11). Include dual meets (vs. one other team), Relay Carnival (on 6/29), and Divisionals (7/19). • “B” meets are for swimmers to swim what they didn’t swim during the previous Saturday “A” meet. • Swimmers may bump themselves into an “A” meet by their “B” meet times. • Divisionals are the “O” division “playoffs”. The top two swimmers for each event/age group compete in this meet.
Spirit: • Looking for a Spirit chair. • Friday night dinners • Friday night activities/pep rallies • Swim Meet Themes • Mini-trips • Cheering at meets (before, during, after)
Recognition: • Swimmers/coaches talk before events AND after events • Coaches hand out ribbons 1-2 times per week (on Mondays—following Saturday and previous Wednesday meets) during post-practice team meetings. Swimmers will receive their ribbons by receiving “mail” (ribbons in envelopes) from coaches. • Coaches will recognize swimmers who get DQ’d by purposely working with them during practice the following week. • End of the year banquet (July 28th at pool)
Volunteering: • Minimum four (4) volunteer slots per summer • Need Team Spirit Committee chair (Dan will assist); and Concession Lead volunteers (Danielle will assist) • Expect Marcie Blackman to get in touch with us before meets if we need volunteers • Officials (Referee, Stroke and Turn, Head Timer) • Check website to register/confirm slots • SSL hours offered to swim team members (pre-team helpers, concession helpers) • Without volunteers, we can’t run meets
Swim team registration: • Friday, 5/2. 5:00-7:30 PM. Payment, volunteer sign-ups, swim suit fitting/ordering. Checks must be made out to “Washingtonian Woods Waves”. • Signups online (www.wwdwaves.org) : Thursday, 5/1-on. May sign up online, but must pay in person. Please update your online information (especially e-mail) and child’s t-shirt sizes.
