How did the Reformation Begin? • Selling of indulgences by the Catholic Church • Martin Luther was against it, and against 94 other things • He nailed the list to the door of a Catholic Church • It was called the 95 Theses (the list of things) • It became a movement to REFORM the Catholic church

  4. Protestantism • The Christians who protested founded their own denominations based on their beliefs • The first Protestant denomination was Lutheranism, named after Martin Luther • Other early denominations included Calvinism, developed by John Calvin • Calvinists believe in predestination

  5. English Reformation • Church of England broke away from the authority of the pope & the Catholic Church

  6. Counter Reformation • Reforms made by the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant Reformation

  7. Bloody Mary • Queen of England who wanted to reinstate the Catholic Church • Had over 300 Protestants burned at the stake for heresy • Got the name “Bloody” Mary
