Product Development - Requirements • Market analysis – surveys, competitor analysis, prospective customers, request for proposals • Individual customer’s requirements • Input from User’s Group meetings • Input from ABB engineering and customer support
Network Management R&D For DIS • Current major R&D projects: • Mobile Crew Map Presentation • Crew Scheduling
Mobile Crew Map Presentation Project • Goal: • Provide fully integrated OMS and Mobile Workforce Management System, with tabular and geographical mobile data user interface • Approach: • Use partners wherever possible to provide functionality • Expand upon initial work done for PG&E, CPS and APS projects • Use APIs and middleware to allow different vendor functions to be plugged in • Benefits: • Provide more information to field crews to improve their productivity
Outage Management API Mobile Dispatch Store and Forward Wireless WAN Store and Forward Mobile Adapter Tabular User Interface API Mobile Map User Interface Mobile Data Integration Approach
Overview of Integration at PG&E and CPS • Send outage assignments directly to Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) from NM DMS • Receive assignment status updates from MDT (enroute, arrived) • Update assignments automatically to MDT as outage engine rolls outages up • Verify and complete outages from MDT • Display crew login status in NM DMS, as entered from MDT
Mobile Data R&D Project Scope • Provide capability to view assignment information on geographic display on mobile laptop • Force outage upstream/downstream from MDT • Show location of other crews on mobile laptop • Show current switch status and tags on mobile laptop • Allow entry of damage assessment on mobile laptop • Allow different geographical viewers to be plugged in: • MDSI Viewer • ESRI Viewer • Mapframe Viewer • Other GIS viewers • ABB Viewer (possible future)
Crew Scheduling R&D • Goal: • Provide scheduling and supporting data structures to manage outages and service work • Approach: • Develop key components that can be used either standalone or integrated with third party scheduling tools • Benefits: • More efficient utilization of crews • Faster assignment of crews to outages and service work

Network Manager DMS Product Vision • Underlying software architecture will not change significantly • Modular architecture allows components to be upgraded, however • OMS functionality maturing, but still room for large storm restoration tools, for example • DMS functionality being added to OMS • Power system applications continue to evolve • Integration with other IT systems is key
Network Manager DMS Product Vision • OMS: • Further integration of OMS and mobile data systems • AMR Integration: • System-wide residential AMR coverage • Distribution Automation Integration: • Standalone telemetry in OMS • SCADA control from OMS • SCADA Integration: (ABB and third party) • Integrated EMS/DMS/OMS • Integration of SCADA one-line diagrams into OMS • Applications: • Further migration of distribution planning applications into control room
Combined OMS and Mobile Data Systems • Benefits: • Faster, more accurate passing of assignment to crew • Real-time updates to crew as outages roll up • More accurate outage status provided to customers • More timely outage verification/restoration information passed to OMS – provides more accurate picture of outage situation to management • More accurate knowledge of crew locations allows outages to be dispatched more efficiently • Result: • Less time spent on the radio frees up dispatcher to focus on restoration and switching • Crews spend less time being sent to imprecise locations • Shorter restoration times
Full Residential AMR Coverage • Two-way communication between meter and AMR server • Communication between AMR server and NM-DMS • Benefits: • Faster outage notification • Prevent unnecessary trips to investigate problems at customer side of meter • Faster outage confirmation and identification of faulted area • Look-ahead prediction logic can call upstream meters to determine extent of fault • Restoration confirmation allows nested outages to be detected and crew sent to fix problem while they are in the area
Distribution Automation Integration with OMS • Utilities are adding more remote controlled switches and reclosers downstream of substation • Telemetered reclosers can provide fault current information to locate fault • Telemetered fault indicators can help localize the fault further • Remote controlled switches can support sectionalization to remotely isolate fault and improve customer minutes • Linked with RSA, can have a significant effect on customer minutes • Capacitor control applications also require sending commands to turn capacitors on/off • Current and voltage measurements can also be used to get more accurate load flow results
Tighter SCADA Integration • Tighter integration between SCADA/EMS and DMS/OMS (ABB and third party) • Increased benefits by integration: • Improved communication via common tags and switch orders • Navigation between geographic displays and one-line diagrams • Single login to all systems • Integrated fail-over and server status • Integrated training simulator • State estimator and load flow can be connected • SCADA alarms system can be used by DMS
