Site License Advisory Team December 2, 2013 meeting
Agenda • SLS Server Change in November • Microsoft Student Advantage (Office 365) • Renewals: • SAS • JMP • SigmaPlot • Maple • Upcoming upgrades • Corel and Adobe and Creative Software • Questions & new location for meetings going forward
SLS Changes Servers • In early November, OCIO Site Licensing changed servers for software downloads • Initially, this caused some issues • Issues were marked resolved by about the third week of Nov. • Improvements include: • Additional, enterprise-level support • More reliable large-file downloads • Faster downloads
Microsoft Student Advantage • Last month we told you about a change in MS student licensing. Here’s the rundown: • MS is offering schools the ability to license students in their own way for Office 365 • This provides most of the value from the more expensive option ($100k+/year more) that we did not option to buy in our renewal • Rollout: this is the hard part
Office 365 for Students • Offering allows students to install five desktop copies and five mobile copies of Office locally. • License is subscription, not perpetual • This would be an add-on to Buckeye Mail for students • We would need to do a lot of backend work to make this work for us.
Office 365 for Students • WiredOut will continue selling perpetual Office licenses to students/faculty/staff for $50. • Over time, we will be able to bring on Office 365 ProPlus, but impressions are that it will take some time to stand up the infrastructure • Once it is stood up, it will likely also be sold through WiredOut
Office 365 for Students • Discussion with Microsoft on Tuesday was very candid regarding these changes. Microsoft indicated in that call that we would see something (not a refund) to account for the change. • OCIO will have representatives at the IUC meeting Nov. 1 to understand what Microsoft will offer.
Microsoft SQL Server • We continue to negotiate with Microsoft on this topic.
System Center 2012 R2 • Now available via Self Service (and working) • Windows 8.1 • Windows Server 2012 R2 • System Center 2012 R2 • SCEP R2 for Mac, Linux, and Windows up for download • OCIO has removed SCCM SP1, Windows 8, and Server 2012 from Self Service and replaced them with the new offerings • KMS Servers for 8.1 and 2012 R2 up and running
Completed Renewals • SAS • Renewals began 9/1 with new codes (already received; Codes began to warn on 11/15, hard fail 12/31/13 • Renewing SAS 9.1.3, SAS 9.2, SAS 9.3, and SAS 9.4 • SAS 9.4 is (64-bit only) • Distribution Update • Reviewing download on new server to help get 9.4 out.
Upcoming Renewals • JMP • PO cut last week, invoice received, payment in process • Expiration: Nov. 30 • Warnings start: Jan. 15 • Codes Hard Fail: March 1 • SigmaPlot • PO cut, codes in process • Codes Fail: approx. Dec. 4 • Maple • 2 and 3 year quotes received today. • Expiration Dec. 17 (no codes to replace)
Upgrades • JMP 11 – Update scheduled to coincide with new codes (expected Mid-December) • SPSS 22 – Update scheduled for Mid-December • Secunia 7 – Expect an e-mail this week if you are a user to begin the upgrade process • SAS 9.4 – Pending tests of downloads, and USB duplication process
Adobe and Corel • We’ve reached out to Adobe again to try and re-start stalled discussions • Very attractive offer from Corel for their Creative suite was accepted by MHEC. • If we buy enough we can put it in the hands of students cheaply ($15/copy for a perpetual license) • Corel is interested in an IUC-wide deal that might be better than the MHEC pricing, as well.
Questions/Comments • Next meeting Jan. 31, 2014, 10 AM • There is no December meeting, but by January we will no longer have use of BSE 580. • John Jacobs has offered a room over at Fisher CoB
