The Catholic Reformation is also called the Counter-Reformation • Counter-Reformation- Catholic efforts to reform the Church and fight Protestantism • Pope Paul III led the reform of the Catholic Church • Council of Trent- 1545-1563 • Reaffirmed that salvation comes through faith and good works (not the Bible alone as protestants claimed) • Reformed Church finances with stiff penalties for corruption • Provided for better training for priests • Priests had to have a vocation or a “calling from God” to become a priest • Ended many of the abuses addressed by Luther and others
The Inquisition Pope Paul III strengthened the Inquisition (Church court to hear cases of heresy) heresy- religious belief that is contrary to the teachings of the Church Used torture, secret testimony and execution to end heresy Prepared the Index of Forbidden Books, a list of books which were believed to spread protestant beliefs
The Jesuits New order of priests formed by Ignatius of Loyola To combat heresy and protestant thought Highly educated , strict discipline , absolute obedience to the Church Jesuit priests became advisors to Catholic kings and rulers Jesuit universities were/are considered very demanding academically: Georgetown, Holy Cross, Creighton, Loyola, Boston College, Fordham, Fairfield
Persecution Many people were killed in witch hunts by the Catholic Church Jews were once again persecuted during the Catholic Reformation or Counter Reformation In Venice, Italy, Jews were forced to live in a certain area of the city called a ghetto Luther also ordered Jews to be evicted from Christian lands As a result to increased persecution, Jews migrated in large numbers to eastern Europe and parts of the Ottoman empire
