Council of Trent: 1545 • Council established to direct reform • Reaffirmed traditional Catholic views • Salvation comes through faith and good works • Bible is major source but not only source of religious truth • Steps to end church abuses • Provided stiff penalties for worldliness and corruption • Established schools to create better-educated clergy
The Inquisition • Court set up during the Middle Ages to root out HERESY • Pope Paul strengthens Inquisition to fight Protestantism • Created list of books too immoral or irreligious for Catholics to read
The Jesuits -Ignatius of Loyola • Strict program of spiritual and moral discipline • Goal: Defend and spread Catholic faith • Jesuits became advisors to Catholic rulers to help combat heresy • Missionaries spread the Catholic faith to far away lands
Teresa of Avila • Est. her own order of nuns; very strict practice • Lived in Isolation, eating & sleeping very little; dedicated themselves fully to the faith • Canonized by the Church
Legacy of the Catholic Reformation • Majority of Europe remain Catholic • Achieved some conversion – from Protestant back to Catholic • Charity flourished & church abuses reduced • Protestantism gained strong foothold on continent • Religious conflict still plays part in Europe
