  8. Sign In • In compliance with the law, all visitors coming into the school must sign in and wear an identification badge. • The visitor laptop is located in the front office. • Your hours of service make a difference!

  9. MES Volunteer Hours  • When logging in at school you MUST LOG IN AS A VOLUNTEER! • If your name does not appear in the drop down list when selecting “Volunteer” please let someone in the front office know, so your name can be added into the computer! • We lose A LOT of volunteer hours each year because volunteers are not logging in correctly!!

  10. Logging Hours Outside of School • You must track your total volunteer hours that would not have been logged into the school registration computer. • Examples of volunteer hours completed outside of the school. • Preparing for a classroom party • Scheduling/coordinating activities for a committee from your home • Shopping/preparing food for conference dinners • Participating in an evening PTA meeting, etc. • FCPS Tracking Log

  11. Why Track Hours? • In order to qualify for the MDSE (Maryland State Department of Education) Certificate, MES must have twice the number of volunteer hours as students in our schools. • For example, if we have 700 students in our schools, we must have at least 1400 volunteer hours to qualify for the certificate. • Why is this important – earning this certificate assists in earning grants and funding for our schools!!

  12. Confidentiality • A priority! • Information about a student or teacher should never be discussed outside of the school or with another person unless it is with a necessary staff member. • Contact the teacher or an administrator with any concerns that you may have. • Thank you for your help in keeping MES information or data secure. • MES Confidentiality Agreement!

  13. Food Allergy Precautions • Food items of any kind should never be distributed to a child without the permission of the homeroom teacher. • If a child complains to you that they aren’t feeling well, please inform a teacher or staff member immediately!

  14. Some reminders • When you come in to volunteer, this is NOT the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. • If you need to meet with a teacher, please set up a different time and place that is convenient to both. • Please respect the teacher’s planning time and other special duties.

  15. Discipline • Discipline of all students is to be done by a staff member. • Please do not distribute personal notes, tokens or prizes without teacher approval. • If you are working with a child or a small group and difficulty arises, let the teacher know immediately. • Remember it is the behavior of the student we disapprove of, not the student.

  16. ReportingSuspected SChildAbuse/Neglectbu Neglect • Address your concerns with a staff member and/or an administrator. • We will assist you with the process for reporting abuse or neglect.

  20. Standard Precautions • Notify an FCPS staff member immediately of blood or body fluids so it can be cleaned with the appropriate cleaning agents by the custodial staff.

  21. Prevention is the Key • Assume that any blood or body fluid is infectious. • Avoid blood and body fluids and create a barrier. • Wear safety gloves or use another form of protection. • If gloves are not readily available, use paper towels or tissues to use as a temporary barrier between you and the student’s blood or body fluids. Ask the student (if able) to hold the barrier in place.
