Welcome Volunteers GVE Parent Volunteer Training 2014-2015
GVE is a PBIS School We teach all students to… Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Ready to Learn
VOLUNTEER ROLES AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL These suggestions are only a beginning • Reproduce materials • Prepare bulletin boards • Gather resource materials • Set up science experiments • Assist children in the lunch room • Conduct flash card drills • Make and play instructional games • Help children select library books • Help with handwriting practice • Prepare/stuff Thursday folders • Assist during classroom parties • Help children with arts and crafts • Help with book fairs • Help arrange assembly programs • Assist with field trips • Discuss careers or hobbies
Accountable Hours • Everything you do for our school is considered volunteer time • Volunteering in the school or at home • Field trips • Any time spent on committees • Babysitting so another parent can volunteer • PTA meetings • Shopping for items for events • If you are not sure if something you are doing is considered volunteer time… JUST ASK!
Personal/Health Concerns Each volunteer must fill out an emergency contact form and school volunteer application and confidentiality agreement, along with a copy of identification. All forms need to be submitted to the main office, where your information will be held in confidence.
Personal Belongings Please bring ID with you to the school. Lock your other personal belongings in the trunk of your car, or make sure they are not visible from any window. Coats may be kept in the classroom…please check with the teacher for the best place to hang it.
Phone Calls School phones are generally not used unless there is an emergency. Cell phones should be on vibrate during regular school hours. Please check with the office staff, they can assist you with getting an outside line.
Respecting Instructional Time When you come in to volunteer, it is not the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. If you need to meet with the teacher, please set up a different time that is convenient for both of you. Please respect the teacher’s planning time.
Confidentiality Be careful of the following practices, which are sometimes commonly done but represent unintentional violations of student confidentiality rights: Publicly indicating when a student “has detention” or “is suspended”. Forgetting to close a door and people outside of the office (especially students) overhear the trouble you are having with a particular student. Chatting in the hallway - impromptu discussions that reveal disciplinary action, students receiving special education services, medical needs, or family challenges. Open discussions about students with parent volunteers or school personn who DO NOT HAVE A LEGITIMATE NEED TO KNOW.
Attendance Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program. Please call the school so we can notify the teacher if you are unable to volunteer on your scheduled day.
Dress Code Dress appropriately for the task. For example, your dress would be different for a field trip to a farm than a regular volunteer day at GVE.
Field Trips All chaperones must complete this volunteer presentation, sign a confidentiality agreement, and emergency contact form before attending field trips for the year. Always remember…notify the teacher immediately if a difficult situation arises.
Sign In All visitors and volunteers must sign in and wear an identification badge/sticker. Safety is our number one priority!!

Emergencies To report an emergency please call the office on any school phone by dialing 63400.
Universal Precautions In the event of a student injury… Contact the nearest teacher. Contact the office or health room.
Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect Address your concerns with the teacher and/or school administrator.
Fire Drills Everyone must leave the building immediately and exit with the nearest class. We cannot re-enter until administration gives the “all clear.”
Lockdown In the event of a lockdown, everyone must remain within the building until clearance has been given to leave. We are responsible for every individual within the school during a lockdown and safety during this time is crucial.
BLOOD BORNE PATHOGEN INFORMATION for Volunteers Be Safe – Use Caution The risk of contracting a blood borne pathogen disease such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HTV in the school setting is extremely low, but does exist. It is important to take time to protect yourself before rushing to the aid of a child who is experiencing a bloody nose or is bleeding from a cut or scratch. Resist the natural impulse to rush to a child’s aid without regard to your own personal safety. Allow the teacher to care for the situation if at all possible. If the teacher is not immediately available, put a barrier between yourself and the blood before touching the child. Ideally, this barrier should include latex or vinyl gloves, but several layers of tissue, paper towels or other material may be used if you do not have gloves. Be prepared by knowing where gloves, tissues and paper towels can be found. 1/2
BLOOD BORNE PATHOGEN INFORMATION for Volunteers continued Care for Exposures Immediately If you get blood or other body fluids visible contaminated with blood on broken/non-intact skin or if you are stuck by a contaminated sharp object or bitten or scratched hard enough to draw blood, you should: encourage bleeding from the injury, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, notify the school principal and go to Corporate Occupational Health Solutions (301-698-3001) for evaluation. If the blood is only on your clothing or is on intact skin, it is not a true exposure and follow-up is not necessary. 2/2
