Join our Walkersville Elementary School 2012-2013 Volunteer Orientation to make a difference! Be ready, respectful, and responsible. Volunteers help motivate, enrich curriculum, and support students. Sign in, log hours, follow safety procedures, and maintain confidentiality. Get involved in various roles - Workroom, Classroom, PTA, Book Room, Learning Lunch, Media Center. Complete the Volunteer Interest Form, Confidentiality Agreement, and Emergency Card to begin your volunteer journey. Your dedication matters in shaping a successful academic environment. Let's work together for the betterment of every child!

  2. Volunteer Orientation Walkersville Elementary 2012-2013 “Volunteers are individuals who work for free but not for nothing, they work to make a difference!”

Volunteer “Be’s” • Be an advocate for W.E.S. • Be confidential • Be enthusiastic • Be positive • Be dependable role models for students and staff • Be willing to help others • Be aware of everyone’s differences • Be a willing learner • Be ready to exercise your sense of humor • Be ready to have fun!

  6. Sign In/Sign Out Wear a Badge • Please use the computerized name tag system in the office. By signing in as “Volunteer” your hours are automatically recorded. Please use the personal time sheet to log in your “at home” hours. • Maryland State Department of Education gives recognition to schools who meet or exceed the criteria of 2 hours of volunteer time/student; we need to document at least 1100 hours of your time to earn recognition this year!

  7. Logging In Hours Please log in all of your Volunteer Hours through… 1. The computer in the office when you sign in as a volunteer. 2. A chart if you are completing volunteers hours from home.

  8. Hours that count. . . • Volunteer at W.E.S. • At home working on teacher’s materials • Field trips • PTA functions (Book Fair, chaperone at Sock Hop, W.E.S. celebrations, etc.) • Spent babysitting while another parent volunteers in the school • Completing tasks for W.E.S. Find Out First will also have weekly opportunities to Volunteer.

Bullying, Harassment, and Intimidation If you witness any behavior which you consider bullying or harassment of a student or staff member, please do the following: Tell the classroom teacher Tell the guidance counselor Tell the school administration Fill out Bullying, Harassment, and Intimidation Form (green form located outside front office)

  11. Blood Borne Pathogens • Be safe - Use caution • Know where gloves are kept • Use “alternate barrier” • Care for exposures immediately

  12. Safety First Lockdown: In the event of a lockdown, everyone must remain within the building until clearance has been given to leave. We are responsible for every individual within the school during a lockdown and safety during this time is crucial. Fire Drill: Everyone must leave the building immediately and exit with the nearest class. Confidentiality • Don’t share any personal or confidential student information • Please keep all student records private • Please do not administer any medication or medical information. • Please do not discipline a student • Issues/concerns should be addressed directly with teacher, volunteer coordinator, or administration.

I will contact you as soon as possible so you may begin your volunteer hours.
