4. What does it really mean? • Setting higher standards • Annual testing to measure progress • Analysis of the test data annually • Rewards and penalties aimed at schools where students do not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)

5. Curriculum • Georgia has changed from Quality Core Curriculum to Georgia Performance Standards • QCC’s to GPS – QCC’s took 21 years to teach • GPS has more hands on, relevant learning

6. What else does it include? • Reading instruction - instruction in phonics, decoding, comprehension, and literature appreciation - daily exposure to both fiction and nonfiction - vocabulary and comprehension instruction - frequent opportunities to write

9. A principal must now • Be responsible for making sure that the instructional methodology, the instructional materials and the professional development activities employed in his or her school meet NCLB’s definition of scientifically based research in terms of their proven effectiveness.

10. A principal must now • Ensure that students in their school participate in the assessments designed by their state to measure progress toward achievement of the state’s academic standards. • For us that’s PSAT, EOCT, GHSGT

11. And the principal must now • Make sure we disaggregate the data resulting from those tests and make changes accordingly. • Sub groups are important • 40 students in a subgroup must be counted

12. And now • The results of all the testing and the status of a school’s Adequate Yearly Progress must be published. • SCHOOL REPORT CARDS • Results by performance levels, 2 year trend • Comparison by sub group • Graduation rate / Drop out rate • Attendance rate • Number and names of school in NI category • Professional qualifications of teachers in the state

13. Schools in Needs Improvement Category • Have to develop a school improvement plan • Allow students the choice of transferring to another school in the district that is making AYP • Must provide written notice to the parents

14. Teacher Qualifications • Must hold a bachelor’s degree and be able to demonstrate content area mastery in the subject they are teaching through a state exam • Paraprofessionals – high school diploma, and demonstrate competency on a test

15. School Safety • Persistently Dangerous schools – Choice to attend another school • Gun Free Schools Act – expel for one year • Pro Children Act – No smoking in any building/ children under 18 • Character Education – • Cannot deny access to patriotic groups

16. Incentives for principals • Higher pay to go to a non-performing school • Highly Effective? Would we still be in a nonperforming school? • What would you do?

17. What are we doing at MHS? • Looking at our test scores. • Developing a yearly school improvement plan. • Hiring the best we can get. • Being diligent about discipline. • Looking at individual students to see how to help
