Envision Safety Project Purpose Advocacy for young children during emergencies. Model the use of Appreciate Inquiry as a tool for local community engagement to strengthen emergency planning to support young children.
Appreciative Inquiry is… • …is a strengths based approach to assessment and planning that focuses on what is working and engages a group in developing specific plans for accomplishing their vision for the future. This is different than problem solving: Problem Solving • Identify the Key Problems • Analyze the Root Causes • Search for Possible Solution • Develop an Action Plan Appreciative Inquiry • Discover and Value “The Best of What Is” • Envision “What Could Be” • Design Through Dialogue “What Should Be” • Create “What Will Be”
Project Overview: Outcomes Use an Appreciative Inquiry process to: • Assess current status of community readiness and identify existing strengths and resources • Strengthen partnerships to support effective emergency planning and response for young children • Develop and implement a 90 day action plan to strengthen community readiness
Pilot/Partner Sites • Southern California • San Juan, Puerto Rico • Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Project Steps • Identify Local Leadership:Recruit a local “host” to serve as leadership of initiative in the community. • Survey: Raise awareness, recruit interested stakeholders, and gather baseline survey data. • Summit:Hold a one day Appreciative Inquiry Summit in the local community that engages local stakeholders in assessment and planning. • 90 Day Action Plan: Support implementation of follow-up action plan created at summit. • Evaluate Effectiveness: Conduct survey to evaluate project impact on community readiness and strength of partnerships.
Southern California In Process Currently: • Identify Local Leadership:Recruit a local “host” to serve as leadership of initiative in the community. Key meeting will be held on November 28th. • Survey: Raise awareness, recruit interested stakeholders, and gather baseline survey data. Planning for Spring 2013: • Summit:Hold a one day Appreciative Inquiry Summit in the local community that engages local stakeholders in assessment and planning. • 90 Day Action Plan: Support implementation of follow-up action plan created at summit. • Evaluate Effectiveness: Conduct survey to evaluate project impact on community readiness and strength of partnerships.
San Juan, Puerto Rico Completed: • Identify Local Leadership:Recruit a local “host” to serve as leadership of initiative in the community. • Survey: Raise awareness, recruit interested stakeholders, and gather baseline survey data. • Summit:Held a one day Appreciative Inquiry Summit in the local community that engages local stakeholders in assessment and planning on September 25th, 2012. Currently Implementing: • 90 Day Action Plan: Support implementation of follow-up action plan created at summit. • Evaluate Effectiveness: Conduct survey to evaluate project impact on community readiness and strength of partnerships.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates In Process Currently: • Local Leadership:Working in partnership with Arabian Child to assess emergency preparedness of early childhood education providers in UAE. • Survey:Will be conducting survey of 50 teachers (one group English speaking, a second group Arabic speaking). More detailed survey of specific types of preparedness. Plan to analyze, share, and possibly publish survey results. • Other Partnership Possibilities: We are still exploring other possible partnership and advocacy opportunities including discussions of visiting Dubai.
Lessons Learned/Challenges Overcome • Local buy-in of key stakeholders is critical • It takes time to raise awareness, recruit and bring people to the table • Appreciative Inquiry is a positive model that creates buy-in once the group is gathered • Appreciative Inquiry created positive energy and a shared vision of those participating in the summit
Lessons Learned/Challenges Overcome • Individuals or agencies may feel individually prepared but don’t always feel connected to the community emergency planning efforts. • Challenge gathering key emergency professionals or government representatives for more than one day (adapted the model) • Once we had buy-in and commitment from local “host” leadership, they made it happen. • Follow-up is critical (currently engaged in 90 day follow-up period for San Juan)
Next Steps for Future • Complete San Juan 90 Day Implementation and Evaluation • Target for Southern California Summit is spring 2013 • Conduct survey with Arabian Child in United Arab Emirates. • Analyze and compare results from all three pilots and create a manual or set of resources that can be shared at 2014 World Forum
