Welcome to ECSD CCSS Professional Development 2012 - 2013
Team Norms • Help team members clarify expectations regarding how they will work together to achieve their shared goals Professional Learning Communities at Work Plan Book 2006 Solution Tree
Examples of Team Norms • We will maintain a positive tone at our meetings • We will not complain about a problem unless we can offer a solution • We will begin and end our meetings on time • We will contribute equally to the workload of this team
A Protocol for Establishing Norms • Think of a past negative experience you have had serving on a team or committee • Identify a specific behavior that prevented that group from being effective: for example, whining and complaining, arriving late and leaving early, being disengaged during the meetings, and so on • For each negative norm identified by members of your team, establish a positive commitment statement (a norm) your team should adopt that, if everyone adhered to it, would prevent the past negative experience from recurring
A Protocol for Establishing Norms (cont.) • Groups share out the norms they have discussed that are important for the school to follow during weekly professional development time • As a group determine those norms that are needed for the group to be productive learners each week • How will you hold each other accountable to the agreed upon norms? Discuss a protocol that can be used to help each other focused http://www.elhaynes.org/edocs/Professional_Learning_Communities.pdf Establishing Norms PPT resource http://www.allthingsplc.info/wordpress/?p=1014 From the beginning, establishing a protocol for norm violations
Talk, Listen, Take Protocol • A protocol that promotes equity and engagement for all participants • Develops speaking and listening skills • Allow each individual the opportunity to experience and process a topic or stimuli
Talk, Listen, TakeProtocol • Talk – Partner #1 talks for the given amount of time (usually 2 minutes) – During this time partner #1 is the ONLY person allowed to talk • Listen – While partner #1 talks partner #2 listens ONLY. Partner #2 is allowed to take notes on questions they might have, although they are allowed to ONLY listen. • Reverse the roles – Partner #2 now talks while partner #1 only listens!! • Take – For a given amount of time partners engage in a give and take conversation about the topic.
Talk, Listen, Take Protocol • Think about the ECSD CCSS Professional Development Vision that was just presented. • What is it about the CCSS and the ECSD Vision that keeps you up at night?
Complete Survey • Fill out the survey and turn it in to your facilitator(s) • What are you most excited about when thinking about the CCSS Professional Development you will be engaged in during the current school year? • What are your concerns when thinking about the CCSS Professional Development you will be engaged in during the current school year?
