Matter: • anything that has mass and occupies space.
Matter can be classified by its • -state or phase • - composition or make-up
Based on Kinetic Molecular Theory— • All matter is made up of tiny little particles that are in constant motion. • To make the particles move faster – you heat them up. • To make them move slower, you cool them down • If they get slow enough, they will be attracted to each other
Solid: • -particles that make up the substance are moving relatively slowly. • -They are attracted to each other and just vibrate in place. • - it has definite shape and volume, high density, and is incompressible.
Liquid: • The particles are hotter, so they move more and actually slide around past each other. • It flows, has a fixed volume, takes the shape of its container, and is mainly incompressible.
Gas: • The particles are the free, so they move the most. • - They are not attracted to each other. • - A gas takes both the shape and the volume of its container. • - It expands without limit to fill any space and is easily compressed.
Plasma: • These are like a gas, but have so much energy they have broken apart into charges particles. Plasma exists at such high temperatures, it cannot be put into a container. Found in stars and around lightening.
Changes in State To change the state of matter you must change to motion This can be done by adding to taking away energy (heat) It can also be done by changing the pressure
These are what we call them Melting – Freezing – Vaporization – Condensation – Sublimation – Deposition –
Temperature (T) average kinetic energy of particles Heat - total kinetic energy of particles
