COUNTDOWN TO GRADUATION FALL • Attend College Information Night presentation September 15th, 2016 @ 6:00-7:00 • Follow College Application Procedure. • Take SAT and/or ACT and SAT Subject tests if needed. Send scores! • Visit college campuses. • Visit with College Reps in the Career Center. • Attend school wide College Night event October 18th.. Financial Aid Workshop: Learn about the FAFSA FALL/WINTER • Complete and submit college applications – abide by DEADLINES. • Request mid-year report to colleges if needed. • Complete and submit FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1st. • Apply for scholarships. • Consider attending the On the Spot Admissions event December 9, 2016 • FAFSA support workshop to be held late fall. • ASVAB test, if needed
SENIORITIS A crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include laziness, and over-excessive wearing of old athletic wear, sweatpants and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences, and a general dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as… GRADUATION!
Senioritis May Result In: • Significant drop in GPA. • Failure to graduate in June 2016. • Rescinding of college acceptance decisions. • Unusual and unnecessary panic and stress. • Unbelievable amount of counselor, parental, and student tears. HOW WILL YOU FEEL IN JUNE?

You should turn in these documents to Mrs. Walker starting on Sept. 19, 2016. • Signed transcript request form/Secondary School Report form • Student Brag Sheet • Transcript fees (Montgomery College does not require a transcript at this point). • Stamped, addressed envelopes for colleges that still require mailed documents. • Request a Teacher Recommendation (1 or 2)
What Happens Next? • Ms. Walker will give the counselor the student’s file with the request for a letter of recommendation if needed. • Students need to request a recommendation letter at least 15 business days in advance or recommendation letters will not make the deadline.
What’s in a COMPLETE APPLICATION? • A College Application or Common Application. • Secondary School Report Form • Official Transcript • Recommendation Letters (Allow 15 school days) • Test scores from College Board or ACT • Anything else colleges request (Ex. Portfolio) • Application Fee / Fee Waiver (you receive fee waivers if you qualify for Free or Reduced priced meals).
What Documents are sent by WMHS? • Official transcript which lists: • Courses • Grades (GPA) • Credits for grades 9, 10, and 11 • Course titles for grade 12. • The School Profile. • Recommendation from counselor. (Envelopes and stamps can be purchased through Mrs. Barr.)
What is the Counselor’s Role? • Write letter of recommendation for colleges or scholarships. • Assist students with finding a school that is the “Right Fit”. • Most colleges/universities want to see at least 5 academic classes the senior year. Competition for admission is extremely competitive! Students should check with their colleges before dropping/eliminating academic classes.
What is the Student’s Role in the Application Process? • Create appropriate email address. Use for applications, Family Connection and Common App. • Be aware of each college’s requirements and deadlines. • Complete and submit applications before deadline (don’t wait until the last minute). • Follow WMHS College Application process. • Check each college’s scholarship webpage and the College and Career Center page for scholarship list.
The University of Maryland Application • Priority deadline is November 1st. • Submit by this date for best chance of admission & to be considered for Honors, Gemstone, Scholars, & merit scholarships. • 95% of the class will be selected from these applicants. • Test scores need to be sent directly from the test centers to College Park. Request by October 1st. • Request official transcript by October 1st.
Montgomery College • Applications are available Online beginning October 1 –FREE until March 1, 2017. • Due date for the Scholars Program and Macklin Program is in January 2017. Separate application. • There are Associate’s degree & certificate programs. • Students MUST take the Accuplacer if they do not have an ACT or SAT score higher than a 21 for the ACT and a 500 for the SAT. • Take assessment tests before registration. • No need to request transcript to apply.
ACCUPLACER Determines course placement at many colleges in the state of Maryland if you did not receive a 21 on each section of the ACT or 500 on both sections of the SAT. Take it SERIOUSLY!!! A student who tests at the lowest developmental levels will pay an additional $2,700 (county rate) and complete at least two additional semesters in non-credit courses.
NCAA PROCEDURES • Student athletes considering Division I or II colleges must register with NCAA no later than October 1st. • WWW.ELIGIBILITYCENTER.ORG • Send ACT and/or SAT scores to Clearinghouse. • See Ms. Walker for official transcript.
CHECK E-MAIL REGULARLY!(be certain it is professional and appropriate) • Colleges, Federal Financial Aid and Maryland Higher Education Commission communicate with students through e-mail.
