Quality In Defence Sean Hanlon – Quality Technician
Background • Joined Thales Glasgow in 2008 (Modern Apprenticeship). • Experience in PCB design, armoured vehicle kit installations, circuit board test & fault finding and product test & build. • During apprenticeship, studied Electronics at HNC level. • Have been involved in representing the company with school road-shows, assisting in hosting student visits, factory tours and attending events such as DSEI exhibition in London.
Background • Spent last year of apprenticeship working in Naval quality. • Source inspections at suppliers, hosting customers for source inspections / FATs and product assurance.
Background • Completed Modern Apprenticeship in September 2012.
My Role Now • Currently a Quality Technician. • Developing skills and knowledge in the discipline through various departments and product ranges. • Working closely with people who have over 40 years experience in working with naval periscopes. • Granted sponsorship to study Mechanical Electronic Systems Engineering Degree. • Hoping to develop into a quality engineer.
Promoting Quality • Promote quality roles to mainly universities (possibly schools) through road-shows and hosting company tours. • A lot of Engineering interest, but more awareness of the Quality discipline needs to be introduced. • Quality secondments for apprentices / graduates. • Work experience placements can work closely with Quality technicians / engineers. • Promotional videos that target the required audience.

My Thoughts On Quality • Requires thorough, careful and efficient individuals. • Good opportunities for career progression. • Recognition for doing the job effectively. • Chances to visit supplier and customer companies and learn about their procedures and ways of working. • No 2 days are the same. • Well respected role with huge responsibility. • Requires pride in work.
