  2. AgricultureWhat is an animal yoke used for? What do we use today? • An animal yoke is a wooden beam, which is placed in between two oxen to enable them to pull farm equipment behind them. This yoke is called a bow yoke because of the shape of the crosspiece. It is held on the animals' necks by an oxbow, which then transmits force from the animals' shoulders. A pole is attached to the center of the yoke that is then used to drag equipment behind the oxen.

  3. EntertainmentWhat are dominoes used for? What do we do today? • This is a domino set and its wooden box, which features a sliding removable top to allow easier access to the dominoes. Dominoes are little tiles twice as long as they are wide; their dots represent the throws of two cubic dice. This domino set consists of 45 dominoes, includes double blanks (meaning no dots), and goes up to double eights. Such double-eight sets, though popular in the 1800s, are no longer used or produced. These dominoes are made of wooden backs with bone tops, with dots set into the bone side.

Do we use them today? • Once the sun had gone down, all light came from oil lamps or candles, which were held upright by candlestick holders, like this one. This candlestick is holding a whale oil peg, which would have been filled with whale oil and burned.

  5. Home LifeWhat is the purpose of a rocking chair? What do we use today? • This chair retains most of its original fabric, which is a maroon-colored plush textile with a floral design. The wood that the chair is made from is either solid walnut or walnut veneer; a veneer is a thin covering rather than a solid piece of wood. The chair is thought to be the chair shown in the painting of Caroline Smith (1991-25.1), who is reported to be the wife of an ambassador to the Texas Republic. The chair is dated to the first half of the 19th century.

ClothingWhat is a spinning wheel used for?Why don’t we have spinning wheels today? • The great wheel, also known as walking wheel or wool wheel, was used for rapid long draw spinning of woolen-spun yarns or other long fibers. The great wheel is usually over 5 feet in height. The large drive wheel turns the much smaller spindle assembly, with the spindle revolving many times for each turn of the drive wheel. The yarn is spun at an angle off the tip of the spindle, and is then stored on the spindle.
