Sphere • The names of Earth’s four spheres are derived from ancient Greek. The Greek word for “ball” is spharia, from which the word sphere is derived. The Greek prefixes: • • Atmos = vapor • • Hydro = water • • Geo = Rock • • Bios = Life
Atmosphere The blanket of gases that surround the earth made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor. It is approximately 300 miles thick and is the transition between earth and space. Water is transferred between the hydrosphere and biosphere by evaporation, transpiration and precipitation.
Hydrosphere All of the water on the earth found in oceans, ice caps, atmosphere, groundwater, surface water, plants and animals. The presence of water on the earth makes it unique in the solar system. 71% of the earth is covered with water. Water moves through the atmosphere, biosphere and geosphere in the water cycle (evaporation, precipitation, transpiration, percolation and runoff).
Geosphere The solid part of the earth made up of the crust and the upper mantle.The crust is made up of ROCKS , minerals and soil and is about 340 miles thick. The crust is made up of continental and oceanic plates that are constantly moving very slowly. This is called plate tectonics. The crust holds all of the landforms that support the biosphere and hydrosphere.
Biosphere The zone on earth that includes all living organisms and organic matter that is not yet decomposed. This includes all plant and animal life and their interrelationships. Plants use carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in photosynthesis along with water and energy from the sun to make simple sugars and oxygen that goes back into the atmosphere for animals to use.
