  2. Cold War Policies under Eisenhower Republican President 1953-1961 (Vice-President Richard Nixon)

  3. Why did people vote in a Republican President? • Korean War - containment didn’t work • Soviet Union was becoming a larger threat

  4. “More Bang for the Buck” • Ike wants a strong military AND strong economy, but maintaining a military is expensive. • Reduced the size of the army and navy. • Put efforts into developing Strategic Air Command (SAC), superbombers, and nuclear weapons

  5. Massive Retaliation • Containment is not enough… • Massive retaliation = the threat to use nuclear weapons • New policy of reducing armed forces and increasing nuclear arsenal • 1953=1,000 bombs 1961=18,000

  6. Brinkmanship • The willingness to go to the brink of war to force the other side to back down • Example: • Korean War

  7. Eisenhower Doctrine • The United States would defend Middle East against an attack by ANY communist country.
