Respect means one cares about the feelings, opinions, and needs of others.
In any interaction, it is important to show respect for yourself and others.
Show respect by: • Listening • Being supportive • Avoiding mean/ negative comments and actions • Sharing • Taking turns
Disrespectful behavior: • Interrupting • Name calling • Teasing • Not sharing or taking turns
Respect can be shown even if someone is mean to you. You just have to put forth the effort!
Empathy is demonstrating concern by understanding how the other person might feel.
It is not so much feeling sorry for the person, but showing acceptance and compassion.
Empathy should be shown toward those who have a disease or disability.
Self-respect is a reflection of a healthy self-esteem, and helps you avoid behavior that could harm yourself.
Being proud of yourself and your accomplishments is one way to show self-respect.
NONVERBAL communication shows your mood and how you are feeling!
Nonverbal communication: • Facial expressions • Posture • Body movements • Gestures
At times, our nonverbal communication matches how we are feeling, and sometimes it does not.
Being able to interpret and understand nonverbal communication is part of empathy!
Along with talking and listening, empathy is part of communication. It allows you to see from another person’s point of view!
If the verbal and nonverbal messages do not match, you should ask questions to increase your understanding of how the other person is feeling.
Empathy decreases the likelihood of conflict, fights and bullying.
However, if a conflict does happen, violence can also occur. Acting on angry emotions in hurtful ways is not acceptable behavior. It can be destructive!
Situations that may lead to violence: • Someone is disrespected. • Someone’s safety is threatened. • Someone’s needs are not met.
Although anger is a normal emotion to being hurt, frustrated, or excluded, there are better ways (like using problem-solving skills) to finding a solution!
The most common form of disrespect children have to deal with is BULLYING. Bullying is not acceptable in any situation.
Bullies may hurt or frighten you. This behavior is illegal and should be reported to an adult.
Bullying Behavior: • Punching, shoving and other acts that hurt people physically • Spreading bad rumors about people • Keeping certain people out of a “group” • Teasing people in a mean way • Getting people to gang up on others
Handling Bullying: • Calmly tell the bully to stop • Try to ignore the bully • Leave the area if the bully has a weapon or tries to start a fight • Tell a counselor, teacher, or school administrator
Bullies, disrespectful people, or anyone who does not have your best interest in mind may represent an unhealthy relationship in your life.
Unhealthy Relationships: • One person may be controlling or bossy • Either or both people are ok with letting the other down • There is no honesty or respect or mutual concern • There may be selfishness or blaming others
Healthy Relationships: • Mutual respect, care and consideration • Looks forward to seeing that person, or misses them when they are absent • Trustworthy/dependable • The relationship is fun for all • Can be yourself and feel valued • Each person makes plans and considers the other
It is important to have healthy relationships in your life, not unhealthy ones.
