Let’s take a closer look at the various parts of the food chain.
In our last lesson we learned that producers convert energy from the sun into organic matter through the process of photosynthesis.
We also learned that this organic matter (glucose or carbohydrates) is used by producers and consumers as food which provides the energy that fuels basic life processes.
The Sun provides the energy that is used by the Plants. The Sun is the original source of energy in all food chains on the surface of the Earth and in the upper parts of the Oceans.
Plants and algae are our producers. They make their own food from the energy created by the sun and with the help of water and carbon dioxide.

Producers and consumers produce wastes as they perform their life processes, and become waste organic matter when they die. This organic matter goes back into the ground to fertilize the soil.
Decomposers use these waste materials and other non-living organic matter to fuel their life processes and recycle nutrients that are necessary for producers to carry out their life processes.

Let’s review what we have learned from this lesson. Answer the attached questions on the worksheet entitled L#46 classify organisms part 2.
In our next lesson we will learn more about the relationship between plants and animals.
Good Job Today! And remember to….
