Training of Teachers on School Safety • Target Groups • High School Teachers • Coastal Districts
Learning needs • Teachers need to be trained in all stages of disaster management i.e- preparedness, Response, post disaster rehabilitation • Past Disasters have shown that children are very vulnerable to disasters. Hence. Knowledge has to be transmitted to them through the teachers • Need for preparation of school safety plan including building level and outside disasters
Course Targets • Teachers will be able to train their students in different aspects of disaster management • Trained teachers will be able to contribute to development of more suitable curriculum for students • They will be trained in preparation of school safety plans
Scenario development • Multi-hazard profile for the training • The possible hazards for a coastal school • Cyclones • Floods • Tsunami • Earthquake • Hailstorm • Vector borne hazards • Industrial hazards • Man made disasters like bomb blast, riots etc
Modules of e-learning components • Concepts of disaster management • Vulnerability profile • Types of disasters • Preparation of School DM plan • Institutional and legal aspects of DM • Monitoring and evaluation

Planning • Inputs • High school teachers should have basic computer knowledge • A minimum teaching experience • Difficult for teachers to come for an exclusive class room training programme on DM • Activities • Face to face interaction • Printed Course materials through correspondence • Chatting • Pin boards • Project works • Sharing of innovative ideas by all • Field study reports
Planning…. • Outputs • Bridging the gaps in knowledge in DM • Developing an appreciation for DM and school safety • Taking the technology learning to the level of schools • Accepting responsibility as trainers for students in DM • Outcome • Creating a technology platform for dissemination and sharing of knowledge even other than disaster management • High schools tanking up the role of technology centers • Schools could be disaster management centers with trained teachers for dissemination of disaster early warning, relief information sharing etc • Impact • A new dimension is created in training and capacity building • The course design could be used for other development activities
