  1. SURVEY OF INDIA

  2. FUTURE PLANS Swarna subba rao SURVEYOR GENERAL OF INDIA

  3. SURVEY OF INDIA, is the national survey and mapping agency of the country under the department of science & technology and is the oldest scientific department of the Govt. of India and was established in 1767. The Survey of India has played an invaluable role in the saga of India’s nation building. The scientific and development initiatives of the department have played an indispensable pioneering role in understanding country’s priorities in growth and development.

  4. Jammu Chandigarh Ambala Dehradun New Delhi Jaipur Lucknow Guwahati Ajmer Gwalior Varanasi Patna Shillong Mt. Abu Silchar Ranchi Jabalpur Kolkata Ahmedabad Bhopal Indore Vadodara Raipur Bhubaneshwar Nagpur Pune Vishakhapatnam Hyderabad Bangalore Chennai Coimbatore Palghat Thiruvananthapuram Nationwide Location of Offices

  5. Survey of India takes a leadership role in providing customer focused, cost effective and timely geospatial data, information and intelligence for meeting the needs of security, sustainable national development and new information markets. Vision

  6. Mission To create, maintain and make available the National Topographic Database of the country conforming to National Standards To Promote the use of geospatial knowledge and intelligence through partnerships and other mechanisms by all sections of the society and work towards a knowledge-based society

  7. Mandate To act as adviser to the Government of India on all survey matters Geodetic Surveys including Control Work, Geophysical Surveys and Tidal Observations Topographical Surveys and Mapping within India on different scales Matters concerning International Boundary Survey for Developmental Projects Cantonment, Large Scale City Surveys, Guide Maps etc Publication of Geographical Maps and Aeronautical Charts. Special Series Maps

  8. Services and Products Geodetic Survey Satellite Geodesy - GPS Observations Tidal Observations High Precision Leveling Geomagnetic Surveys Gravity Surveys Topographic Survey Topographical Survey on different scales Large Scale Mapping Others Project Surveys, expeditions etc.

  9. Topographic Maps Special Series Maps Guide Maps, Tourist Maps Coordinates, BM Heights Indian Tide Tables Geospatial Digital Data for GIS applications Digital Elevation/Terrain Model Services and Products

  10. . • Topographic Mapping on 1:10000 Scale

  11. OBJECTIVE Creation of National Digital Topographical Database of India on scale 1:10,000 with contour interval 5 metres in 3 yrs and scaling upwards to 3m in 5yrs.

  12. NEED FOR 1:10K MAPPING • 1:50,000 scale, it is not possible to depict utility buildings like hospitals, schools, police stations, post offices etc • On 1:10,000 scale, all such buildings can be comfortably depicted. • Microzonation for Disaster Management requires 3D base maps on scale 1:10,000. • In assessing natural resource endowments, agricultural practices, grazing lands, village forests, which are essential for rural development can be shown on scale 1:10K. • Defence have also expressed for maps on 1:10K / 5K scale for the whole country.

  13. THE VOLUME OF WORK The creation of the NTDB on 1:10,000 scale is a mammoth task. This can be evident from the number sheets required to cover the country. Taking 3’X3’ coverage for one sheet on scale 1:10,000 we would require about 1,32000 sheets approximately .

  14. INDIAN COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT PROJECT .

  15. ICZM project assumes special significance in the context of climate change since one of the definitive findings of the IPCC relates to the increase in mean sea levels as a result of global warming.

  16. ICZM PROJECT BUILDS CAPACITY INSTITUTIONS CONTROLS Pollution of coastal Waters & EXPANDS Livelihood options of coastal communities.

  17. Work Breakdown (Summary) • Levelling • DT Levelling – establish BMs • ST Levelling – establish BCP (heights) • b) Establishment of Primary GCPs • c)Establishment of Secondary GCP and BCP (Hor) • Aerial Photography • QA/QC procedures • Photography • MOD clearances • Photogrammetry and Map Data generation • Aerial Triangulation (AT) • Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Contour generation • Orthorectification

  18. Tidal Data Analysis • Computation of 100 year Return Period Flood Line. • Erosion Data Analysis • Computation of 100 year Return Period Erosion Line Line. • Mapping Final / Composite Hazard line • Most Landward of Flood Line / Erosion Line. • Demarcation of Hazard Line • Fixing of Markers/ Pillars

  19. COAL MINES PROJECT Director Technical (Coal Resources Development), CMPDI, Ranchi To generate the topographical maps of the 28 major coalfields of the country covering an area of 26414 sq km on 1:5,000 scale with 2 meter contour interval in plains (in case of hilly terrain, contour interval may be 3-5 meter as practicable) in GIS digital format, based on Digital Photogrammetric Techniques using high resolution aerial photography with ground verification.

  20. salient features: • Mapping will carried out in 3 phases. • Mapping will be carried out @ Rs.36,254 per sq km, this figure has been calculated in SGO. • The following deliverables will be given: • Hard copy (3 sets of prints on high quality, non shrinkable paper + 1 set of print on non-tearable, polyester transparency sheet). • 2 sets of soft copy for each map on CD.

  21. ACTIVITIES OF GEODETIC & RESEARCH BRANCH

  22. Charter of Duties Provision and Maintenance of Geodetic planimetric and Height Control Network. Horizontal control, vertical control, construction of Bench Marks and Monuments, Carrying out of High Precision levelling etc. on National basis. Required accuracy has to be maintained. Service Sector

  23. Provision and Maintenance of Gravimetric and Geomagnetic control network. • Collection of Tidal Data along the coast line and islands. • Tidal Predictions for 76 ports ( 30 Indian Ports, 14 Ports of Indian responsibility from Suez to Singapore and 32 Ports received on exchange basis from foreign countries). • Publication of Indian Tide table and Hugli River Tide Table. • Provision of Control (Horizontal & Vertical) for National Developmental Projects in India and Adjacent countries. • Specialised studies like Dam deformation, Seismotectonic, crustal movement, Glaciology and checking of verticality of minarets of historical monuments. • Participation in Antarctica Expeditions to provide Control, Mapping and other related studies in Antarctica. • Advisor to the Surveyor General of India on matters related to Geodesy.

  24. Wings Gravity Magnetic Astronomy Glaciological Studies
