Interface Basics • the place at which independent and often unrelatedsystems meet and act on or communicate with each other <the man-machine interface> b: the means by which interaction or communication is achieved at an interface
HL7 - An information exchange protocol used in medicine, and possibly elsewhere. It is different from DICOM. • Protocol - (computerscience) rulesdeterminingtheformatandtransmissionofdata • Import - tobringin • Export - Tocarryaway; toremove
Interface Engine • What is an Interface Engine? • Put simply, an interface engine is a hospital’s “telephone exchange” for clinical data, ensuring that information passes smoothly and quickly from one hospital computer system to another. • An interface engine is a software program designed to simplify the creation and management of interfaces between separate applications and systems within an organization. Interface engines undertake messaging between systems, and normally manage any mapping, translation and data modification necessary to ensure the effective exchange of data around the organization. • Another way to think of an interface engine is the centralized, automated “hub” of a messaging network. Rather than connecting all systems to each other individually, (a highly complex, time-consuming and unreliable process), an interface engine acts as the intermediary for all messaging between hospital systems, as illustrated in the following diagrams:
How can I get my patient data into my office system? • Meditech • What’s available? • Lab, Radiology, Departmental • How do I obtain it? • Flat file, HL7 interface • What will it cost my practice?

Iatric Systems (other offerings) • Visual Flowsheet for Physicians (VFMD) - presents clinical data in a user defined flowsheet format to facilitate the review and correlation of patient data. • http://www.iatric.com/CDDemo/VFSDemo6-03.exe • Physician Discharge Prescriptions (PDRx) - pulls patient's current medication list in Meditech and allows Physicians to select (and/or add) medications, then prints the actual prescription. • http://www.iatric.com/CDDemo/PDRxDemo6-19-02.exe • Patient Discharge Prescriptions (PDI) - assembles your discharge instructions into one simple, electronic discharge package completely integrated with Meditech and stored with the patient's records. • http://www.iatric.com/CDDemo/PDIDemo6-19-02.exe
