Cortes and Aztec Empire • Spain first colonized the Caribbean region • Hernando Cortes later Conquered Aztec Capital Tenochtitlan • He was helped by some native peoples who resented the Aztec • Surprise, diseases and superior weapons helped Spanish win over the Aztec in 1521. • The Colony of New Spain was established. Spanish Pattern of Conquest • Spanish men lived among Native Americans • They married native women • Children born were called Mestizos • Spanish used forced labor from the Native Americans • Encomienda system was established • 1542 encomienda was abolished and Africans were brought as slave laborers. Northern Spanish Colonies • Juan Ponce de Leon explored Florida in 1513 • 1562 Spain abandoned the colony • 1565 Spain recolonized Florida and established the city of St. Augustine under the leadership of Pedro Menendez de Aviles. U.S. History & Government
Southwestern Spanish Colonies • Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition to Southwestern part of Modern US [Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas • The areas were called New Mexico. • Pedro de Peralta Established Santa Fe as the capital of New Mexico. U.S. History & Government
Resistance Against Spanish • Spanish Tried to Christianize the native peoples and impose Spanish culture on them. • Spanish soldiers and priests destroyed sacred relics of local natives • Spanish imposed a tribute on people and forced them to work for them • Natives who refused were beaten • Pueblo religious leader Popé rebelled against the Spanish and drove them back to New Spain.
