  6. Design : Magnet • Preliminary Magnet design Working Group closed after the ESAC dipole review (14 meetings) • Magnet Design Working Group created in January. Already 14 meetings have taken place • The magnet design is considered as fixed : Some recent changes done, e.g. insulation thickness between coil 2 and 3 : 0.5  1.5 mm CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  7. Design : Cold mass Mechanical structure is fixed, however some points are still pending (see next pages): CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  8. Design : Thermal studies Thermal studies (WP 7.2) • Study at 4.2 K  OK • Modeling of cool-down process – 2 D transient model • From 300 k to 20 K : indirect col-down through cooling tubes • From 20 K to 4.2 K : direct filling with helium • Modeling of thermal process in the magnet during ramping process – 2 D steady state model • New study : Two fluids model at 1.8 K CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  9. Design : Protection P. Fazilleau: report within a few days • Protection: 2 or 3 quench heaters per quadrant ? • At tdet = 100 ms (50 ms for detection and 50 ms for heaters activation), • 2 heaters : T max = 244 K • 3 heaters : T max = 224 k • 3 heaters reduce the thermal gradient 3 heaters 2 heaters 2 heaters 3 heaters 2 heaters 3 heaters CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  10. Tests : Upside down winding • Simpler tooling • Is the winding easier ?  Yes • Is the conductor stable and in good position ?  Yes • Chosen configuration But Dishing CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  11. Tests : Dishingmeasurement • Measure dishing effect in order to take it into account for the tooling design • Choose the winding parameters minimizing dishing effect • It exists on cable before winding • It is enhanced during coil winding • Could it be corrected by adjusting the cabling parameters ? Studies ongoing at CERN CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  12. Tests : Jump layer test • Check jump layer design • Choose between single or double bending • Test done with annealed copper, non annealed copper, PIT Nb3Sn cable with 120-mm and 140-mm twist pitch  Notannealed Cu and the two PIT cables exhibit a similar behaviour • Dishing is the same in the two winding directions • The double bending is chosen • Some minor improvements (gaps in the grooves, plate fixation, …) on the real tooling single bending double bending CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  13. Tests : Cable behavior during heat treatment 1) PIT cable without "end mandrel" • The dishing is significantly increased after heat treatment • No significant change in overall dimensions 2) PIT cable with "end mandrel" • The cable is unstable in straight parts • The end mandrel has moved (~0.6 mm) and 1.4 mm gap between cable and mandrel has been measured • Dishing in the end part has disappeared CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  14. Tests : Cable behavior during heat treatment 3) Cu cable with "end mandrel“ (short thermal cycle) • The dishing is increased in the end part and has disappeared in the straight sections • No move of the end mandrel • Some Cu traces on shims Following tests: • New support allowing 1-10 complete turns • Additional cycles with titanium, stainless and magnetic steel CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  15. Tests : Mechanical structure An assembly test of the structure with a dummy magnet is in preparation • Parts fabrication will be launched soon this year, after small drawing updates Structure mock-up CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. Rifflet - EuCARD HFM - Task 3 : High Field Magnet

  17. Dipole – Insert Interaction & Interface • Mechanics: • Inner free dipole diameter = 100 mm • The insert is mechanically independent of the dipole (gap) • Protection: • Coupling of magnets and effects on protection should start soon CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M. 20. Conclusions Fresca2 magnet design (2D and 3D) is now well advanced. Some point still to be fixed soon Winding tooling is defined and will be tested beginning of 2012 Validation tests have started. More tests have to be done to understand the behaviour of the cable during winding and during the heat treatment. This is necessary to fix the winding and curing process. Tests made with PIT cable must be repeated wit RRP cable A structure assembly test is planned early 2012 A lot of work has been done but … a lot of work is still to be done CEA/DSM/Irfu/SACM – J.M.
