UNDP-GEF ABS GLOBAL PROJECT Participating project countries: Albania, Belarus, Botswana, Colombia, Comoros, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mongolia, Myanmar, Panama, Rwanda, Samoa, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Tajikistan, Uruguay ABS and the Global ABS Project

BASIC INFORMATION GLOBAL ABS PROJECT • 24 countries at the global level (6 per region) • DURATION: 3 years (end of the project August 2019) • GEF FUNDING PER COUNTRY: USD 350.000 • COUNTRY CO-FUNDING: average around USD 700.000 • OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT: Assisting countries in the development and strengthening of their national ABS frameworks, human resources, and administrative capabilities to implement the Nagoya Protocol

Management of the Project • The Project is executed under Direct Implementation Modality (DIM) and UNDP is the Implementing Partner. • Project Coordination Unit (PCU): Programme, administrative and financial support through UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) • Partner (Responsible Party) will: • coordinate and execute component 4 and • provide support to national implementation in 5 countries LAC

Components of the Project • Strengthening the legal, policy, and institutional capacity to develop national ABS frameworks • Building trust between users and providers of genetic resources to facilitate the identification of bio-discovery efforts • Strengthening the capacity of indigenous and local communities to contribute to the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol • Implementing a Community of Practice and South-South Cooperation Framework on ABS

  9. Priority for 2017 • By the end of the year all the draft legal ABS frameworks are ready for discussion (and approval)

What does the Global ABS Project OFFER you? • The Global Team of the Project is here to support you and your countries (not just the ones from the Global ABS Project but all countries where UNDP has national ABS Projects)We are resources at your disposal • Access to a specialized ABS Community of Practice • Useful information related to: • Potential use of biodiversity and genetic resources in the countries • Best practices, business models, and research and development processes of key industries (pharmaceutical, botanical, biotechnological, agricultural, the food/beverage biotechnology, and cosmetics sector). • Relationship with Indigenous and Local Communities, applicable for other fields (biodiversity and environment)

INITIAL ACTIVITIES • Two Regional Inception Workshops: • Panama, 7th February 2017 (6 countries- Latin American and Caribbean countries) • Istanbul, 27-28th April 2017 (18 countries) • Approval of AWPs: • 2 Workplans are pending (Egypt and South Africa) + UNV • National inception workshops: • Uruguay (April 6th); Panama (May 16th); Comoros (May 19th); Dominican Republic (May 23rd); Sudan (May 24th); Honduras (June 23rd); Jordan (July 17th); Seychelles (July 19th); Kazakhstan (July 26th); Ethiopia (July 26th); Kenya (August 1st); Myanmar (August 17th); Rwanda (August 30th); Mongolia (September 7th) • Regional training for lawyers and policy makers (Panama, 30th July- 3rd August 2017) • Support to the ratification of the Nagoya Protocol by the National Assembly in Ecuador (August 15th) + IW (August 22nd) • 10 IW pending confirmation

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT ACTIVITIES TO OTHER UNDP PROJECTS Webinar to EBD colleagues June 13th 2017 Agreement to support Cook Islands and Fiji in the finalization of their GEF national projects Regional exchange of experiences in LAC coordination with Mexico and Argentina (UNDP ABS nat. projects) Facilitation of an exchange mission from Morocco (UNDP-GEF ABS national project) to South Africa (Global ABS) Possible support to Lebanon through UNDP CO after the lack of funds to its National ABS project Possible co-organization of a regional activity with Bioversity and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture Possible support to community to community exchange Africa-India (South Africa, feb. 2018/ GIZ-UNU-Natural Justice) Possible support to SCBD and IDLO in their regional trainings in 2018
