Big 3 • 10.9.1-Compare the economic and military power shifts caused by the war, including the Yalta Pact, the development of nuclear weapons, Soviet control over Eastern Euro­ pean nations, and the economic recoveries of Germany and Japan. • 10.9.8-Discuss the establishment and work of the United Nations and the purposes and functions of the Warsaw Pact, SEATO, NATO, and the Organization of American States.

  4. Reminder • WWII test-Last day, Wednesday at lunch • Handouts-Last day, Wednesday by 4:00pm • I will only discuss tests and handout turn-ins during brunch, lunch or before/after school.

  5. Pre-Cold War Activity-10 min • Please, do this quietly on your own.

  6. Timeline Activity-40-50 minutes • Directions • Read Chapter 17-1 (pg 531) • Find 8 of the most significant events at the start of the Cold War-These events are up to YOU. • You may work with a partner, but everyone has their OWN paper. • On the back of the Pre Cold War Activity, divide the paper into 8 squares. • In CHRONOLOGICAL order, put your events into each square • For each event: • Put a title and date ….example: Yalta Conference-February 1945 • Draw a picture for each event • Write a sentence or two explaining what’s going on.

Allies Become Enemies • Tensions started in WWII • Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact with Germany • Stalin was angry the Allies didn’t help Europe earlier • Yalta Conference-Feb 1945 • US, Britain, and S.U. decided to divide Germany into military zones that would be controlled the Allies. • Germany had to compensate (pay) the S.U. for the loss of life and property • The S.U. joined the war against Japan-remember the war ended in the summer of 1945 • Countries can choose their own governments.

  8. Allies Become Enemies • Creation of the United Nations-June 1945 • Formed by 48 countries • Protected the member against aggression • Permanent members-Britain, China, France, United States, and the Soviet Union

  10. Eastern Europe’s Iron Curtain • Soviets needed a buffer from foreign invaders • Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech, Romania, Poland, and Yugoslavia become communist • Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met in Potsdam, Germany-July 1945 • Encouraged Stalin to permit free elections in E. Europe

  11. Eastern Europe’s Iron Curtain • Germany was split into two. • East-controlled by Soviets • West-mostly democratic • Iron Curtain- division between Eastern communist countries and Western democratic countries

  12. United States Tries to Contain Soviets • Pres. Truman adopted the Containment policy • Tried to block Soviet influence and the spread of communism in other countries • Formed alliances with non-communist countries and helped countries who may be influenced by communism

United States Tries to Contain Soviets • Truman Doctrine • Gave monetary (money) aid to any country that rejected communism • Ex. $400 million to Greece and Turkey • Marshall Plan-1947 • After WWII, many European countries were in ruins. • This plan gave food, machinery to help rebuild W. Europe. • Ex.) Czechs were seized by the Soviets, Yugoslavia was able to break away from the Soviets after receiving aid.

United States Tries to Contain Soviets • The conflict in Germany • 1948, France, Britain, and the U.S. wanted to withdraw forces from Germany • Soviets wanted Germany to stay weak so they took West Berlin hostage • Rail lines into western Berlin were cut off, people were starving • British and American forces dropped food into western Berlin • Stalin lifted the blockade and withdrew
