  3. May 4th Movement • World War I Treaty of Versailles • hands power of China to the Japanese • 3,000 Students protest in Beijing (Tiananmen Square) • Demanded changes to government • Rise of Chinese Nationalism • Nationalists, led by Sun Yatsen begin fight against the warlords

  4. Chinese Communists • Sun Yat-sen gets support only from Soviet Union • in exchange Communists are admitted into the Nationalist Party • Mao Zedong leads the Chinese Communists

  5. 1927 Shanghai Massacre • Chiang Kai-shek secretly attacks Communists in the party • Mao Zedong and communists barely survive attack • 1928 Nationalist Republic of China Established • created and led by Chiang • promises a return to Sun’s 3 principles • formally recognized by U. S.

  6. The Chinese Civil War • Fighting all out by 1930 • Nationalist vs. Communists • Chiang Kai-shek vs. Mao Zedong • Nationalists have the money and military • Communists have the support of the peasants

  7. The Long March • 1933 Chiang wants to end the war in one blow • Sends 700,000 troops to hunt down Communists • Communists run and hide • walk over 6,000 miles • lose troops as they go but convert more and more peasants Mao Zedong during the long march

  8. World War II • 1931 Japan invades Manchuria • 1937 Japan invades mainland China • Nationalists and Communists stop fighting each other to fight Japan

  9. Communists fight in the north • Supported by the Soviet Union • Focused on gaining peasant support • 1945 controlled Northern China

  10. Nationalists fight in the south • Still led by Chiang Kai-shek • 2.5 Million Troops • Corruption rampant • U.S. sends in $1.5 billion in aid
