Our Political Beginnings American Government
W.A.L.T. • Evaluate the influences that English government had on the origins of the U.S. government.
The British Influence • The beginnings of the United States can be traced to the 1500’s when European explorers began to arrive in greater numbers. • The English set up the 13 colonies. • They brought with them a political system that had been developing for centuries in England. • They also brought with them 3 basic ideas of government that would come to influence the U.S. more than any others.
Ordered Government • The first Americans saw a need for regulation and laws to protect individuals. • Many of the offices they created are still with us today: sheriff, justice of the peace, and counties.
Limited Government • The government should be restricted in what it is allowed to do. • Every individual has certain rights that they are born with that cannot be taken away.
Representative Government • The government should serve the will of the people. • The people should have a say in what the government does. • “a government of, by, and for the people”
The Magna Carta • A group of barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. • They wanted protection against arbitrary acts by the king. • Guaranteed the rights of trial by jury, due process. • The King’s power was no longer absolute.
The Petition of Right • After the signing of the Magna Carta, Parliament began to grow in power. • They forced the king to sign another document. • The Petition of Right: • barred the King from sheltering troops in people’s homes without their consent, and • from declaring martial law in times of peace • The King could also no longer punish someone without a trial by a person’s peers.
The English Bill Of Rights • In 1689, after years of revolution, Parliament offered the Crown to William & Mary. • To prevent any further abuse of power, Parliament forced them to sign the English Bill of Rights. • The Bill of Rights included: • A right to a fair trial • Freedom from excessive bail • Freedom from cruel & unusual punishment.
