The British East India Company gained control of all Indian trade- June 23, 1757 The Battle of Plassey was established by the British East India Company to gain control of all Indian trade. Because the Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal, the victory of the British resulted in their control over trade from a national to a local level.
British Parliament passes India Act (the Raj) Aug. 2, 1858 Because Britain gained control of most of India by 1858( the time period of British rule was referred to the as the Raj), the India act transferred that control to the British crown. Before the India act was enforced, the Indians tried to rebel but were defeated. There were many conflicts between the British and the Indians. Britain’s economy prospered as they gained India’s wealth but India was suffering greatly. The British had so much control over India that only two fifths of India was not under British rule.
Indian National Congress founded-1885 The Indian National Congress was founded by Sir Allan Octavian Hume. The idea behind the Indian National Congress was to create a foundation where the British and Indians could share their views and thoughts. This established the British Empire to have more understanding to help them rule over India in a more successful way. This eventually failed to be successful.
Muslim League wants a separate Pakistani state- 1906 The Muslim League was founded at Dhaka in 1906. It eventually led to Pakistan becoming a Muslim state but found little support. Indian Muslims anticipated to have their nationality recognized and respected. It was created to benefit Muslims. Muslims wanted welfare for themselves and wanted to stand up for their dreams against the government. The Muslim league also failed to be successful.
Gandhi's Salt Marches- March 12, 1931 On March 12, 1931, Gandhi led approximately 100 people hundreds of miles to the ocean to protest against the British salt taxes. This big event attracted the press and the investigative reporters and editors to get the word out that Indians are protesting. Gandhi made sure he did so in a peaceful way.
Pakistan and India declare independence -August 14, 1947 Because the British split India into two separate nations, it cause many conflicts and problems with India and Pakistan. The east region was Muslim provinces and the west region was Pakistan provinces. Today, India is Hindu provinces.
First battle over Kashmir- Aug. 26, 1947 Kashmir was a region that many disputed over. Because the majority of the population was Muslim, Pakistan believed the region belonged to them. Indians believed the region belonged to them because Maharaja Hari Singh signed it over to them.
Gandhi assassinated- Jan. 30, 1948 There were several attempts to assassinate Gandhi. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu Radical, who believed Gandhi was too sympathetic towards the Muslim population.
India becomes a Democracy-1950 India is the world’s largest democracy. Because of Nehru, India’s first prime minister, India adopted a constitution and became a Democratic Republican. India’s Democratic tactics were influenced by both British and American governments. The government is a federation of states like the U.S. and parliamentary government like Britain.
