In this teamwork lesson, participants will engage in the Airball Challenge to improve their communication and cooperation skills. They will learn how to develop a standard operating procedure and reflect on their learning outcomes.

Activity 1.1: Airball challenge The goal: Use the carrier tube to deposit as many balls as possible into the goal tube in five minutes. Rules • Strings must be tied to the carrier tube to move the tube and tip it. Each group member must hold at least one length of string. • No handling of either tube within 2m of the goal tube. • No moving position once a ball has been placed in the carrier tube.

Activity 1.2: Agreeing a standard operating procedure • Check we understand what we are doing. • Split the challenge into different tasks. • Remind ourselves of our ideas. • Give people different jobs to do. • Brainstorm our ideas to help us achieve the challenge. • Choose a group organiser. • Read the challenge. • Decide how we will allow everyone to have their say and be heard. • Agree a set of commands that will help communication. • Check time or keep to schedule.
Airball challenge rules refresher • Use Blu-Tack to stick one tube in an open space, open end upwards. This is the ‘goal tube’. • Tie the strings to the other tube so that the tube can be carried and tipped. This is the ‘carrier tube’. • Transport a number of balls (one at a time) to the goal tube. • Each group member must hold at least one length of string connected to the carrier tube. • No team member may handle a ball within 2m of the goal tube. • No team member may move from position once a ball has been placed into the carrier tube.
