  1. City of NormanEnergy Management EPA Region VI Pretreatment Workshop August 4, 2010

  2. Energy Management Why? • Energy costs • Up to 55% of facility operating budget • Potential savings of 20 – 40%

  3. Business Case for Green The best way to convince organizations to go green is by showing the value of eliminating environmentally wasteful practices. The more data (specific ROI) the better. Bottom line: Using less energy, water, raw materials, producing less garbage, and discharging fewer pollutants allows you to cut the costs required to run an organization. Green = More Competitive.

  4. Energy Management How? Energy Conservation Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy

  5. Energy Management Energy Conservation Policies • anti-idling • lights out • wise use of energy – not having equipment on when not in use

  6. Energy Management How? Energy efficiency • Improved lighting • Energy-efficient equipment and appliances – • Building improvements • Improve heating and cooling efficiency • Efficient transportation • Conserve water • Update building codes • Improve operations and maintenance

  7. Energy Management How? Renewable energy

  8. Energy Management Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade • Received a $1,000,000 stimulus grant • Two projects • Variable frequency drive upgrade • Replacement of sludge boiler/heaters • Savings • VFD- 2.6 M kWh and $100,000 annually • Sludge boiler/heater project - 5,900 mmBtu and $65,000 annually.

  9. Energy Management Water Reuse • Reclaimed effluent used in processes • Saves the City of Norman 7 million gallons of potable water per month • Approximately 84 million gallons per year

  10. Challenges to Green “It’s not easy being green” Kermit the Frog • Justification to Board of Directors/Shareholders/Sr. Mgmt. • Not part of Vision • Lack of Time/Resources • Don’t Know What to Do • No Process for Employees to Follow

  11. Lean & Green • University of Oklahoma's Lean Institute • Training for Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) and Water Treatment Facility (WTF) • WWTF- energy conservation through pump motor efficiency and efficient use of lighting • WTF – energy conservation through process changes

  12. Energy Management WWTF Pump Efficiency • Audit results: • Total cost of installing nine capacitors: $13, 473.00 • Annual energy savings: $9, 663.01 • ROI: 17 months (1.4 years)

  13. Energy Management Efficient use of lighting • Policy – turn off lights • Audit of facility • Measured the total wattage of lighting (bulbs and ballasts) used in each area of the facility • Estimated the average number of hours each area is currently illuminated daily • Estimated the number of hours the same space would be illuminated based only on actual use

  14. Energy Management Efficient use of lighting • Based on the audit • Installing occupancy sensing light switches throughout the facility (58 total lightswitches) • Costs: $1160 • Savings: • $7,574 estimated reduction in energy costs annually • $292 estimated reduction in light bulb costs annually • Estimated Annual savings: $7,866 • ROI: 2 months

  15. Energy Management Cost Annual Savings Energy Savings • Capacitors $13,473 $ 9,663 138,043 KwH • Switches $ 1,160 $ 7,866 108,200 KwH • Total: $14,633 $17,529 246,243 KwH • Total Project ROI: 10 months

  16. Energy Management WTF -Well Production Overview • Cost to produce water • Cost by $/Kgal (electric) • Cost by gpd (gallons per day) • Which wells to run • What order do we run the wells in • $$ savings
