Verbal communication is the most important part of a job interview. You should practice job interviews in front of a mirror. Maintain constant eye contact with the interviewer to show that you are serious about the job. When seated for your interview, lean back and cross your legs to relax. Keep your hands in your pockets when standing to impress the interviewer with your composure. To maintain a level of comfort you should keep space between yourself and the interviewer. What is Body Language? • Body Language is a form of non-verbal communication, consisting of body pose, gestures, and eye movements. • Non-verbal communication accounts for over 90% of the message you are sending in your job interview! • Verbal content only provides 7% of the message the interviewer is receiving from you. Folding your arms across your chest indicates a defensive attitude. Standing with your hands in your pockets suggests a lack of confidence. Let hands lie loosely in your lap or folded on the table. 1. Read the articles on body language. 2. Ask friends if you have any distracting habits like hair twirling or finger tapping - behavior you might not be aware of. 3. Set up a mock interview and videotape it. 4. Review the tape, make a list of positive and negative behaviors that you see.Highlight any behaviors from #1. 5. Interview employers in 2 different fields. Ask each employer to relate the best and worst body language they have seen. Record key points. 6. Using the information gathered from the your video and interviews, write an article for your school newsletter telling your classmates how to use body language to ace an interview.
