  3. Pyramids • There are many pyramids in Egypt • Built to be tombs for the pharaohs • The most famous one is called the Great Pyramid

  5. The Great Pyramid at Giza • The Great Pyramid of Giza is about 4,500 years old, and is the only ancient wonder still standing. • Built by Pharoah Khufu • *KHUFU- Egyptian pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid

  6. The Great Pyramid at Giza Until the early 1800's, the Great Pyramid at Giza was the tallest building in the world! 

  7. The Great Pyramid at Giza The Great pyramid was made by hand! It is nearly 800 feet long, 450 feet high. It was built with over two million of blocks of stone. The average weight of each stone is about 2,500 pounds - around the same weight as a car! 

  8. Great Pyramid • The 20 year project involved as many as 100,000 people and took a huge amount of Egypt’s resources • Entire cliffs of stone were cut into blocks to make the monument

SUMMING UP THE CHAPTER • Menes untied the kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt to form the largest government in the world at the time • The pharaoh was central to Egypt’s government, economy, and religion • The writing system of Egypt, called hieroglyphics, provided a way for government workers to communicate over long distances • Ordinary people worked to build huge, government building projects like the Great Pyramid. This strained both Egypt’s economy and it’s people
