  8. Winston-Salem’s Story

  9. Winston-Salem’s Story Safety and Congestion have been the traffic engineering’s responsibilities ever since the profession started 90 years ago. In the early 1980’s, in Winston-Salem, we reexamined our roles and responsibilities as a traffic engineering agency. We were able to articulate easily and clearly our role with regard to efficiency, but struggled when we talked about safety.

  10. Winston-Salem’s Story • Without any additional budget, we focused on locations where simple changes in existing signs, signals & markings could be effective. Dedicated small amount of staff time to find crash locations that we could treat

  11. Winston-Salem’s Story We committed to evaluating the treatments we deployed, using a simple statistical procedure.

  12. Winston-Salem’s Story As we began to accumulate completed before & after studies, we organized them by targeted crash types and treatments. This information helped us know the likelihood that a particular treatment would be effective.

  13. Winston-Salem’s Story Committed to our City Council to keep 150 locations under study each year, and to provide an annual report. Over 25 years we completed 858 before & after studies. Targeted crashes were reduced by 51% . A reduction of more than 4,400 crashes over 25 years.
