Overview of EH&S Management at Cal Poly Pomona The Environmental Health & Safety Department is administered by the Director of Environmental Health & Safety and can be separated into the following sections: environmental protection, environmental health, occupational/student safety, training and information management.

Overview of EH&S Management at Cal Poly Pomona Continued Environmental Protection Section • The Environmental Protection Section is responsible for the management of compliance programs that protect the air water and ground from hazardous substance contamination. Hazardous substances include radioactive materials, chemicals and infectious agents. The various compliance programs are listed below.

The training section develops, markets, delivers and coordinate over 50 specifically required training programs.

OSHA and Cal/OSHA • What Is OSHA? • OSHA is an agency of the federal government • It is responsible for promoting workplace safety nationwide • OSHA was created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 • It has the authority to oversee compliance with safety and health laws • Note: California established Cal/OSHA and implements it’s own program which is at least as stringent as the federal requirements

OSHA and Cal/OSHA • What OSHA Does • Develops and enforces job safety and health standards • Encourages employers and employees to reduce workplace hazards • Provides research in occupational safety and health • Establishes the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees • Approves state occupational safety and health programs including California’s program

OSHA and Cal/OSHA • Cal/OSHA regulates most aspects of workplace safety and health • These regulations must be followed • Cal/OSHA wants to help employers comply with the regulations

OSHA and Cal/OSHA The structure of California Occupational Safety & Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) is made up of the following: • Consultation • Enforcement • Standards Board • Appeals Board • Worker’s Compensation Insurance: Treatment/Rehabilitation of Injured Workers • Public Safety Units: • Elevator, Ride & Tram Unit • Pressure Vessels Unit

OSHA and Cal/OSHA Some Critical Points to Remember about Cal/OSHA: • Employee Deaths or Serious Injuries Must Be Reported in 8 Hours or it is an Automatic Fine of $5,000 • Death or Serious Injuries are Loss of Life, Loss of Limb, Serious Degree of Permanent Disfigurement or Hospitalization for more than 24-Hours for Other than Observation • Employers are Required to Investigate Accidents
