  1. Did Kelly Slater just change surfing forever with his perfect artificial wave

  2. Surf Groms in Moana will possibly be waking up to the reality that the breakers on their local beach will one day be challenged by something that once was considered impossible – a high-performance man-made wave.

  3. World champion Kelly Slater has set the surfing newswires alight around the globe with his Instagram update on Friday unveiling the ‘best man-made wave ever made’. Slater’s big update comes just one day after Mick Fanning pipped him in the dying seconds of the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pipe Masters.

  4. If that sounds like a huge announcement, Slater adds he has been ‘sitting on’ it for a couple of weeks.

  5. Don’t expect to rush to watch the action with the maddening crowds – the wave generator is in an undisclosed location, about 110 miles from an unspecified coast. Secrecy reigns king and understandably so. Slater and his team aren’t giving away much – yet – though they’re promising more insight on their revelation in the coming future. For now, the surfing world has to make do with a short teaser video documenting the artificial wave.

  6. “It’s a freak of technology”, Slater said of the wave. “For nearly ten years, my team and I have been working on creating the first truly world-class, high-performance, human-made waves. This is something I dreamt about as a kid. Through rigorous science and technology, we’ve been able to design and build what some said was impossible, and many very understandably never thought would actually happen.”

  7. Why Kelly Slater’s artificial wave will change surfing Man-made waves aren’t new to the scene; Slater had plans to open his own wave park on the Gold Coast before developments fizzled however wave-making technology has always been a hot topic in surfing media. But until now, surfers have commented that artificial waves will never compete with the real thing because of two crucial reasons: they don’t form barrels and they don’t allow progression, vital to allow surfers to get air.

  8. Surfing website The Inertia explains that Slater’s new wave generator has solved both problems, by crafting a wave with a steep face that provides the surfer with enough speed for natural above-the-lip maneuvers. And if there’s one person worthy of a test ride it’s a multiple world champion like Slater. “It was an insane day,” Slater said of his test ride. “I’m still a little in disbelief, and trying to process how much fun this wave is, but it certainly feels like this is going to change a lot of perceptions about human-made waves.”

  9. By eliminating these problems, it puts artificial waves on an even keel with natural waves and opens up market opportunities to no end. By removing geographical restraints, anyone can now experience the sport, resulting in an obvious boon for business. This also means surfing may get a chance at Olympic acceptance as the technology will ensure standardized waves and allow any country the chance to host a surfing competition.

  10. Who knows, perhaps in the future man-made wave generators will blend seamlessly alongside the real McCoy waves when you want totry surf lessons in South Australia.
