Random Internet Searching • The most popular search engine on the internet is Google. • When searching, you will come across millions of hits for your query. • Do not expect all hits to be reliable.
Wikipedia • Wikipedia is a good source for general information, but never use it as your primary or only source. • Anyone can edit or change information on Wikipedia, therefore you may be getting inaccurate, biased or poorly researched information.
Reliability VERY RELIABLE: • Books, magazines, journals, encyclopedias, databases • Both print or electronic encyclopedia versions and online databases like EBSCO can be found on mauihigh.org Again remember: Wikipedia is NOT considered a credible encyclopedia
Social Media Should NOT be used as reliable sources *Credibility/Reliability not guaranteed Examples: • social media posts (Facebook, Twitter) • blogs
A few questions to ask yourself when you are searching online…. • Is there an author? • Is the author connected to a college, university, organization, or company? • Is there contact information for the author?
More questions to ask yourself when searching online... • Is it an advertisement for a product or service? • Is there a bibliography,references or works cited page at the end of the website?
Website endings…. Website/urls can give you hints about the accuracy and reliability of the website. • .com or .net • .org • .edu • .gov • .mil
EBSCO Online Databases A collection of online resources (encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines/journals) that have been thoroughly researched and checked for accuracy. We will be using the Student Research Center Database.
