What is PreAp? Pre AP Information Presented by: Emily Cruz
PREAP Program Information PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses: • typically move at a faster pace, • are academically challenging, • require more independent learning, and • require more homework than academic courses. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
PREAP Program Information • Students may exit a PreAP course during the first 6-weeks grading period or at the end of the 1st semester. • The student must have teacher and parent approval to exit. • If the student’s 6-weeks average falls below 70, it is recommended to exit the class at the end of the grading period. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION Students must meet the following criteria for PreAP classes: 1. Have parent approval. 2. Students taking PreAP English must also take PreAP Reading. 3. PreAP Social Studies is recommended for students taking PreAP English and PreAP Reading. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop • MMJH uses a workshop approach to teaching reading and writing skills. The workshop approach allows time for reading, reflecting, writing, thinking, and discussing in regard to critical reading and writing skills. Students gain a sense of ownership in their learning when they are held responsible for their choices about what to read and write. The teacher acts as a facilitator and a writing ‘expert’ to guide students through mini-lessons and conferencing. A significant amount of time is spent on reading and writing independently so that students may apply the skills to their own choice work.
Curriculum: • The Texas ELA standards are changing in the 2019-2020 school year for grades K-8. Katy ISD’s Secondary Curriculum & Instruction Department has been working with grade-level curriculum writing committees to make revisions to the current curriculum that reflect the changes in standards. For further information about the standards, please refer to the TEA website.

Math Activities Modeling At MMJH, we teach why one is doing something before how to do it. We are ensuring students understand the concepts behind the standard algorithm (the way you might have learned it) before they are introduced to the algorithm. This helps the children have true understanding, leading to better mastery and better retention! You’ll also notice quite a bit more problem solving so ensure children can apply what they’re learning to situations.
Math Activities and Literature Throughout the school year, we use literature. We read Miss Nelson is Missing and The Doorbell Rang. These children books covered the topic of multiple representations between tables, independent and dependent variables, graphs and writing linear equations.
Math Activities and Sports The Houston Texans sponsored our campus this school year. We used football themes that correlated to the Math learning objectives such as integers and percent. One of our students wrote an essay and she was selected out of 250 schools. As a result, she won luxury suite football tickets for her family and Mr. Jow. Next year, we will participate in this program.
Math Activities and Real World Connections Finding Absolute Value from the movie Ferris Bueller Students are calculating Percent of Change using typing speed
Math Activities Creativity For Christmas, we did the prime factorization with Christmas trees. To bring real-world connections to our math classroom, we watch movie and television show snippets that showcase our lessons. For example, we watched a brief video with Giada de Laurentiis from the Food Network. If she baked 7 ¼ cakes at the first taping and 3 ½ cakes at the second taping, how many 1/8 slices can be passed out? Students had to use fraction circles, drawings and algorithm to justify their answer.
Math Activities Creativity We encourage creativity with at-home products of learning. This fall, students created math monsters and cartoon drawings from The Coordinate Plane. This spring, students will write a realtor report that will assess mean, median, mode, range, quartiles and statistics of Katy houses. Students will also have a personal finance project based on students’ future career, university and earning potential.
Math Activities Technology We encourage BYOD or Bring Your Own Device but not needed. During class, we use QR Codes, Quizizz, Padlet, Poll Everywhere, CANVAS, Investigation and Stage Pro. For example, we had students take a picture of their work and have others critique it. To foster home-school relationship, we have MMJH YouTube tutorial videos on every lesson so kids who are absent or those who need to watch it again can go to YouTube and watch it at their own pace.
Math Activities Rigor We encourage rigor by giving students a problem and through collaboration students will solve it with multiple representations. Example have included Perimeter Train, finding the best buy of mouth wash by using unit price, finding the area of a park pool through multiplication of fractions, finding dosages from a medicine bottle.
Large difference in number of objectives covered 5th grade – about 60 objectives 6th grade Academic – about 64 objectives 6th grade PreAP – over 90 objectives with ½ being 7th grade objectives 7thgrade PreAP – ½ being 7th grade objectives and the entire 8th grade objectives (must take the CBE test to enroll in this course) PreAP level of instruction will focus on preparation for taking Algebra I in 8th grade.
