Understanding the Transition to Common Core Teams of Howard County Math Teachers, ITLs, and MISTs developed the transition plan: • Examined cohorts of students • Examined what pre-requisite skills would be necessary to be successful for each Common Core course • Examined what skills students have currently obtained • Determined how best to fill in gaps to meet needs • Organized information into the transition plan
What will Pre-Algebra look like in 2012-2013? • In 2012-2013, students will be receiving most of the Common Core 8 curriculum. • Some gaps will exist, so there will be notes about blended curriculum and other standards/objectives to teach to depth. Some of these will be different depending on the grade that you are teaching. • Grade 7 Pre-Algebra looks very different than Grade 6 GT and Grade 8 Pre-Algebra.

Activity 1: Drops in a Bucket Image Source: http://www.squidoo.com/rain-photography
Activity 1: Drops in a Bucket Your math teacher woke up from a deep sleep very early this morning due to a loud and steady rainfall. She could not believe that she was awoken by rain, so she went outside to see what was happening. She noticed a bucket that was empty before the rain, had collected a good amount of rainwater. She decided to measure the amount of water and at 4 a.m., the height of the water collected in the bucket was 63mm, at 5 a.m. the height of the water was 77mm, and at 6 a.m. the height of the water was 91mm high in the bucket. What time did the rain start?
Activity 1 Debrief • Share your design with other groups. • What mathematical concepts & skills were necessary to complete the task? • Look at the Expressions and Equations unit—when might a task like this be introduced?
Examining the Grade 8 Crosswalk • What is a crosswalk document? • How should it be used? • What does the crosswalk mean for Grade 8?
Activity 2: The Baseball Shop A baseball souvenir shop sells is offering the following packages for signed baseballs, hats, and bats: If the baseball shop sells each item individually, what is the cost of each item?
Activity 2 Debrief • Share your solutions with other groups. • What mathematical concepts & skills were necessary to complete the task? • Look at the Expressions and Equations unit—when might a task like this be introduced?
Mini-Lesson: Comparing Functions • What is a function? A function family? • What is a linear function? • What are key features of all linear functions?
