In 509 BC the people of Rome overthrew their king and began a Republic. REPUBLIC - A form of government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials. When the Roman Republic started the Senators would serve one-year terms.

Homework: Take your journals home. Read The Empire Grows, The Age of Augustus and Choosing an Emperor on page 12 of your text book. Prepare yourself for a quiz. Questions to look out for: 1) What title did Octavian take? What does it mean? 2) What did he start and why did he start it? 3) What was the time called during his reign? 4) How were emperors chosen?
