PROGRAM DESCRIPTION • The International Welcome School, Kg to 9th, is a temporary stopover for students with limited English and low formal education, many illiterate in their native language; some struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. • GOALS: Create a safe, secure and nurturing environment for learning. Accelerate students’ acquisition of English language. Improve their overall academic performance. Introduce them to US culture and school system. Increase their awareness of educational expectations & opportunities.

STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS • Number of Non-English Languages Represented: 15 • Most Common Student Languages: • Arabic • Nepali • Burmese • Kunama • Spanish • Somali • Percentage of Students with Interrupted Formal Schooling: 100% • Percentage of Students with Free & Reduced Lunch: 100%

Exit Criteria • Academic and Social Exit Checklists in the following areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, math, science and social studies, understanding of the school system and school expectations, degree of self confidence and ability to adjust. • Measures to Facilitate Student Transition Out of the Newcomer Program: Visits to the home school for a tour and orientation.ELL teachers at the home schools, ELL Counselor, ESOL Social Worker and program Instructional Coordinators to assist and monitor students’ transition.
