Motivation • Churchill et al. state "motivation is intimately linked with one's sense of self and self-efficacy” and “In the context of educational environments, it is a fundamental component of motivation, emotional wellbeing, learning and success.” (pp. 116-117). • Farmers feel pride in the results of their labours. A good crop that sells well and provides food for the table, animals that grow and are healthy, providing food and stock for breeding.
Learning • Churchill et al. emphasise (2010, p. 253) that "before learning can take place, students’ basic needs must be met". They cite William Glasser's theory (1998) that students need to feel they belong to the class and to groups within the class. When children feel comfortable in their surroundings they will feel a sense of community and belonging and as a result will be more productive and willing to participate and learn. • Some farmers learn from the past, having been raised on farms and learnt from their parents. There are also other farmers around whom they can ask and work together with to get the work do quickly.
